Ghana’s rising cybercrime losses highlight the urgent need for stronger digital security and public awareness. As more people embrace digital financial services, building trust and protecting users must remain a priority.
Ghana has recorded GH¢209.7 million in financial losses from cybersecurity incidents in the first nine months of 2026.
According to the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), 4,938 incidents were recorded between January and September 2026.
The losses represent more than a ninefold increase compared to the GH¢22.5 million recorded in the whole of 2025, when 4,604 incidents were reported.
The CSA's Director-General, Dr Divine Selasi Agbeti, says human error and social engineering account for between 60% and 95% of cybersecurity incidents.
He has urged individuals and businesses to be cautious when using mobile money, internet banking and digital wallets, particularly when dealing with suspicious investment offers, impersonation attempts and requests for personal information.
The Authority has also encouraged the public to report suspected cybercrime through its 24-hour short code, 292.

Paraguay’s largest digital bank collapsing and locking out roughly 3 million users is a stark reminder of the risks of centralized financial systems.
When a centralized platform goes down, access to your money can disappear.
True financial inclusion means having control over your own assets. That’s why financial self-sovereignty matters.
🇵🇾 Chaos on the streets as Paraguay’s largest digital bank collapses
Nearly 3 million customers affected as the country faces a major political and financial crisis.
Paraguay’s Central Bank (BCP) seized Ueno Bank, the country's largest digital lender, after its solvency ratio collapsed to less than half the legal limit.
Central Bank President Carlos Carvallo resigned at the request of President Santiago Peña. Carvallo previously chaired the finance company that evolved into Ueno Bank, drawing heavy criticism over regulatory blind spots and conflicts of interest.
The Specialized Unit for Economic Crimes and Anti-Corruption ordered the detention of eight high-level executives and figures tied to the bank, including founder and majority shareholder Miguel Vázquez and Ueno Bank President Juan Manuel Gustale.
The intervention completely froze Ueno Bank’s digital app, credit cards, and transfer capabilities. This has locked out roughly 3 million users, an estimated 60% of Paraguay's adult population, leaving many with no immediate way to access their money.
The state health and pension fund (IPS) has an estimated $380 million in public retirement funds invested in Ueno Bank.
Angry citizens, savers, and pensioners flooded the streets of the capital and gathered outside closed branches, demanding their cash and chanting for political accountability.
The African Virtual Assets Summit 2026 brought together regulators, policymakers and industry leaders to discuss the future of digital assets in Africa.
From tokenisation and stablecoins to investor protection and regulatory frameworks, the conversations focused on building a trusted and inclusive digital asset ecosystem for the continent.
A step forward for Africa’s digital asset industry.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially launched the African Virtual Assets Summit (AVAS) 2026, positioning the platform as a continental forum for shaping a trusted, inclusive and innovative virtual asset ecosystem.
The launch, held on Tuesday, 29 September 2026 in Accra, brought together regulators, policymakers, industry players, investors and other stakeholders ahead of the main Summit scheduled for 2nd–3rd November 2026.
Speaking at the launch, Director-General, Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, said Africa’s participation in virtual assets was already significant and that the focus must now shift towards ensuring that this participation takes place within appropriate regulatory frameworks.
He said tokenisation could broaden access to investment, improve liquidity and connect African assets, including real estate, gold, carbon credits and trade receivables, to a wider pool of investors. He also stressed that Ghana’s Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154), provides a foundation for supervised growth of the sector.
Deputy Director-General, Operations, Mr. Mensah Thompson, in launching the Summit, noted that the SEC was determined not to repeat the gaps that emerged as Ghana’s traditional capital market expanded. He said AVAS would promote regulatory clarity, stronger coordination among African regulators and greater public understanding of virtual assets.
The Special Guest of Honour, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, H.E. Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson, called for stronger international cooperation and Ghana-UK partnerships in fintech, digital innovation, research and investment, urging stakeholders to translate dialogue into practical investment and technology-transfer opportunities.
The Summit will feature discussions and workshops on tokenisation, stablecoins, AML/CFT, cybersecurity, investor protection and regulatory frameworks, alongside opportunities for developers, market operators and sandbox participants to showcase emerging solutions.
AVAS 2026 will be held in Accra from 2nd-3rd November 2026 under the theme “Tokenisation: Africa’s Pathway Towards Building a Trusted, Inclusive and Innovative Virtual Asset Ecosystem.”

The lines between traditional global trade and blockchain infrastructure are officially blurring. What traditional finance sector do you think is next?
Exactly this. The best financial technology eventually becomes invisible. When issuance and settlement shift entirely on-chain, "tokenized" won't be a buzzword anymore, it will simply be how the global economy runs. How is your business preparing for the shift?
Sometimes the best way forward is knowing when to change direction. Private chains had their moment, but institutions are increasingly seeing the value of public blockchains.
Joseph Chalom on what BlackRock learned about private chains:
"We spent most of 2018, 2019 and 2020 trying to make permissioned chains work. And we failed."
When they launched regulated products, they did it on Ethereum mainnet. BUIDL was, in his words, a message to banks: we tried private chains, it didn't work.
