After four and a half incredible years, I've decided it's time for my next chapter. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to work at OpenAI and witness the surprise, creativity, and awe our technology inspires.
It has been a joy to help manifest this technology into the real world again and again: early API developers built businesses on GPT-3.5, artists unlocked new forms of expression with DALL·E 2, and people came to ChatGPT for everything from homework and coding to deeply personal questions. Most recently, our work on the Model Behavior team has centered on one of the most human questions: what do people need and expect from AI as it becomes part of everyday life?
OpenAI changed the trajectory of my life. I'll be taking a few months off to renovate a new house and get married this summer. After that, I’m looking forward to my next chapter, one focused on people, beauty, and craft :)

I feel so lucky to have witnessed him win gold at the Olympics, build towards fusion energy at @FuseEnergyTech, and now back the world’s most ambitious founders. Liam is one of the most resilient and curious people I know, and he loves nothing more than going deep on a hard problem with the people around him. I’m so excited to see what he does next :)

ChatGPT shouldn’t have political bias in any direction. Today, we’re sharing new research that defines what political bias means in LLMs, and we introduce a new evaluation framework to measure and reduce it.
This has been the most meaningful work I’ve done at OpenAI, and I say that as someone who got to be part of the ChatGPT launch!!
From our evaluation we find that GPT-5 Instant & Thinking show 30% lower bias than our previous models (4o and o3), including in the emotionally challenging prompts.
We found that bias is of low prevalence and low severity. In the rare examples of when bias does appear, it usually takes the form of personal opinions, asymmetrical coverage, or escalatory language.
Millions of people come to ChatGPT to understand the world around them and form their own perspectives. By defining what bias means we hope to make our approach clearer, hold ourselves accountable, and help others by building on shared definitions.
Defining and measuring these axes required translating a deeply subjective topic into rigorous evaluation, and it’s been incredible to work with a team that could do exactly that @stellashimonaka @ianccovert @a_kirchmeyer @Laurentia___ @joannejang

today feels surreal. on the same day i was included in the time100 ai list, we shared internally that i’m transitioning from leading model behavior to begin something new at openai.
building the team, discipline, and craft of model behavior over the past couple of years has been the most meaningful work of my career so far.
so grateful to the model behavior team for their brilliance, heart, and humility in tackling hard, nuanced questions together -- and to everyone who helped model behavior take shape along the way.
