NEW at @RealLastStand: "The University’s War on Excellence" by @georgeabtsports Universities are supposed to reward excellence and independent thinking. But today those very qualities often make someone a target. Perry's article takes a look at academic mobbing, where faculty and administrators collaborate to destroy a colleague’s reputation and career, often by weaponizing HR procedures, tenure rules, and due process to give the appearance of a fair process. Many professors are targeted precisely because they stand out—either as productive academics or simply for their refusal to conform. This problem extends well beyond academia. Universities have helped export this toxic culture of social elimination into the broader society. We may not be at a point where the best professors are the ones universities have already driven out. Read more below. realityslaststand.com/p/the-…

The deeper problem beyond the fact that Elizabeth Holmes is a pathological liar is that her victims succumbed to "Truth Default" theory: Given limited time/access to fact check what people claim, most of us default to believing what we're told is true (e.g., someone tells me they are a Vietnam vet I have neither the time nor resources to check). Most of the time most people are relatively truthful, so Truth Default works as a cognitive heuristic (and liars can get away with lying some of the time). HOWEVER: that doesn't apply to investors, who have a fiduciary responsibility ("due diligence") to fact check claimants before investing. That was not always done in the case of Holmes, in part because they were charmed by her youthful looks, sultry voice, Steve Jobs-wannabe turtlenecks, and her bold promises that Theranos would be The Next Big Thing that investors did not want to miss out on. So while justice is rightly being served against Holmes, the victims of such scams carry some responsibility for letting themselves be fooled. No one held a gun to their head and made them invest. They chose to do so, and because our life outcomes are, in part, self-determined, victims must take some responsibility. No, this is not "blaming the victim." Holmes committed a crime and is getting her just deserts. But neither are her victimized investors naifs. Agreed, in a perfect utopian world no one would lie (or steal, rape, murder, etc.) But that is not the world in which we live. Yes, you should be free to walk around any part of any city anywhere in the world at any time of the night and not get mugged or robbed. But you're an idiot if you do that without taking precautions. Reality matters.

Scientists & science journalists decry the public's rejection of science, but are oblivious to the major cause: the perception, sometimes correct, that scientists are just another political faction. Among the guiltiest perpetrators are the recent editors of Scientific American, who turned this once-beloved treasure into a left-wing propaganda rag. This absolutely does not justify the Trump administration's unconstitutional meddling, but the new owners are right to restore it to its mission of explaining science to Americans. What's it like to be an AI? How would I know? I don't even know what it's like to be a bat, or you, or anyone else (the problem of other minds redux). If I were able to shape-shift from human to bat, I would not retain my humanness while inside the body and brain of a bat. I would just be a bat, full stop. Put another way, asking what it’s like to be one thing precludes one from knowing what it’s like to be a different thing. It’s conceptually contradictory. Understanding how the brain machinery works is different from experiencing the brain machinery itself. nature.com/articles/d41586-0…
