The thing with Berics plan is that it WAS bad. This was the path that accepted Varys' win, with the edge being that Beric gets to "come back" from the dead after. A consolation. There was no beating Varys. People blame Beric for the plan now, but its Varys who paved this path.

It's so sad seeing his friends and family hold him to the fire for accepting he couldn't beat the unbeatable. He didn't question the emotional damage because HE KNEW the only other option was him actually dying! Which he reasonably assumed would be worse emotionally!
