I’ve been watching this whole thing with @osseneth on CT and, frankly, I find people’s reactions to him far more interesting than anything he actually says. 🧵1/3 Here’s someone who apparently joined X in September. He arrived with money, started buying rare Argonauts, sweeping floors, publicly burning Apes and generally making quite a spectacle of himself. And that’s fine. It’s his money. He can do whatever he wants with it. But the reaction from CT? Jesus Christ. The guy can post a skull emoji, a GIF, some cryptic nonsense or an opinion that’s been repeated a thousand times, and people rush to reply as though he’s said something extraordinary. Everyone wants his attention. People laugh at everything, agree with everything, encourage the drama and eagerly await whatever he decides to do next. I wonder whether some of these people even find him interesting, or whether they’ve simply convinced themselves they do because there’s money involved. And then there are the artists practically tripping over each other to get his attention. Laughing at his jokes, praising his every move, hoping he’ll notice them and perhaps buy something. Watching grown adults behave like this around someone simply because he has money is embarrassing. And the worst part is that they’re helping create the very hierarchy this space supposedly wanted to get rid of. At what point did being an artist become a competition to see who can flatter the richest person in the room? There’s something deeply depressing about watching a community that constantly talks about artistic independence behave this way. What bothers me is how quickly people in this space abandon any sense of critical judgment when someone with a big wallet shows up.
