obviously it’s not perfect but wikipedia might genuinely be one of the top ten best ideas of my lifetime. a free, ad-less encyclopedia with millions of articles available in hundreds of languages that the majority of humans can access from anywhere. what a gift

seems to me as I get older that (1) almost all institutions are totally broken, but also that (2) most never "worked" to begin with, and (3) we're living through the throes of a concerted multigenerational effort to make any kind of public life either impossible or simply insane

This is true. @FerroEgo and I are always discussing how regional art galleries are hiding some of their best works.
Leeds Gallery possesses Wyndham Lewis's 'Praxitellia'. It wasn't on display last time I went there. There are so many examples of this it's unreal.
Replying to @Art_Deano
The number and variety of free galleries and museums in this country is incredible. In every city and many larger towns we have free access to outstanding art. My only wish is that more of what is in storage was put on the walls
I started a substack!

Sipping my coffee ☕️ and thinking about these marvellous Minoan cups!
They look so modern it’s incredible to think they were made by Bronze Age potters some 3,800 years ago!

ALT My photo collage shows five cylindrical Minoan cups each with a single handle and a slightly flaring rim. Each cup has a black slip background decorated with a different geometric polychrome motif painted in white, red and orange colours. This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware, after the Kamares Cave in central Crete where this kind of pottery was first found. Kamares Ware vessels were luxury items produced by palace workshops mainly at Phaistos and Knossos. These five cups were excavated at Phaistos and are dated 1800-1700 BC.
Champing at the bit to hear the full recording… very exciting stuff. Keep your ears peeled.

News re Parthenon Marbles: Osborne’s use of the term ‘hybrid’ is a distinct softening of rhetoric. Note Andy Burnham’s comments yday, which indicate a Labour gov may be willing to facilitate the sculpture’s full return to Greece. My report @TheArtNewspaper theartnewspaper.com/2023/02/…

AT LAST!!!
After 40 years of uncertainty, we finally have a chance to own our forever home.
We need to raise £500,000 to purchase our building and secure the home of cinema history, but we need to do that by December,.
Please give if you can crowdfunder.co.uk/p/qr/Onvr1…
