Pakistani cricket expert Dr Nauman Niaz has a rather bizarre theory about Glenn Phillips’ fitness. According to him, New Zealand has “artificially, biomechanically made” Phillips “supreme fit” by hyper-developing his core and back muscles, transforming his batting, throwing and fielding abilities. He even suggests that Phillips’ athleticism is somehow unnatural compared to fielding greats like Jonty Rhodes and Herschelle Gibbs. Apparently, when a player’s fitness, strength and athleticism improve dramatically, the explanation cannot simply be world-class sports science, strength conditioning and years of specialised training. There has to be something artificial about it. Is it allowed under ICC rules?
