What if textiles could preserve the memories that written archives cannot? Nour Hage’s What We Leave Behind transforms onion skins, avocado pits and coffee grounds into naturally dyed textiles, connecting material experimentation with cultural memory. As @ADMiddleEast explores, the installation brings together food waste, inherited knowledge and communal craftsmanship. For textile designers, this offers a compelling perspective: waste —> pigment —> material —> memory —> cultural continuity Beyond sustainability, the work reminds us that knowledge is also transmitted through gestures, making and shared experiences. Perhaps the true value of a textile lies not only in what it is made from, but in the memories, traditions and human experiences it carries forward. #TextileArt #SustainableDesign #Sustainability #Textiles admiddleeast.com/story/onion…

When fashion's waste reaches Ghana's beaches, whose responsibility does it become? As @AtmosMag documents, discarded clothing from the global secondhand trade is polluting Accra's coastline, threatening marine ecosystems and local livelihoods. Initiatives such as Tide Turners and Kanta Keepers are working to recover this waste, revealing a deeper issue of environmental justice and global responsibility. For fashion, circularity must extend beyond recycling: overproduction —> consumption —> export —> waste —> unequal responsibility Perhaps the real question is not simply how we manage textile waste, but why communities far removed from its original consumption must bear the consequences. #TextileWaste #FashionEthics #Sustainability atmos.earth/fashion-and-desi… – at Sunderland, England

What if industrial waste could become a new language of fashion? @Engen_SA's Xtreme Kouture transforms discarded lubricant bottles, packaging, and workwear into experimental garments inspired by South African motoring culture. As @mailandguardian highlights, the project connects upcycling, local craftsmanship, and cultural identity. For designers, the significance goes beyond material reuse: industrial waste —> experimentation —> craftsmanship —> cultural expression —> new value Yet creative transformation alone does not guarantee sustainability. Durability, scalability and measurable impact remain essential. Perhaps the real potential of upcycling lies not simply in giving waste a second life, but in challenging how we define material value in the first place. #Upcycling #CircularDesign #EngenXtremeKouture #EngenXtreme #EngenFashion #Spinning #SustainableFashion 🔗 mg.co.za/partner-content/202… – at Sunderland, England

Iridescent, Davies’in Avustralya'daki tarihî yapıları gösterişli el yapımı kostümler aracılığıyla teatral mekânlara dönüştürdüğü on iki kurgusal otoportreden oluşan bir fotoğraf serisidir. /// Iridescent is a photographic series of twelve staged self-portraits in which Davies transforms historic Australian buildings into theatrical spaces through extravagant handmade costumes. Combining photography, textile construction and performance, the project reinterprets overlooked histories through humour, fantasy and queer perspectives. – at Sunderland, England

What happens when fashion moves beyond garments and becomes an experience of art, space and perception? Rei Kawakubo transforms Comme des Garçons’ iconic SIX publication into a three-dimensional installation at @DoverStMarket London. As @wallpapermag explores, the #exhibition brings photography, architecture, art and fashion into an unexpected dialogue. For designers, this challenges conventional creative boundaries: archive —> experimentation —> reinterpretation —> spatial experience —> new meaning Perhaps fashion's greatest creative freedom lies not simply in designing what we wear, but in challenging how we see, interpret and experience the world. #FashionAsArt #DesignCulture #ReiKawakubo #CommedesGarçons #DoverStreetMarket wallpaper.com/art/comme-des-…

A textile cannot be considered sustainable simply because its fibres are natural, recycled or renewable. As @ecobusiness highlights through GECA's textile standards, responsible production must also address chemical safety, ethical sourcing, workers' rights and environmental impact. For fashion and textile designers, sustainability requires evidence across the entire value chain: fibre origin —> chemical processing —> manufacturing —> labour conditions —> lifecycle impact Certification can support accountability, but meaningful sustainability depends on what you actually measure and verify. Perhaps the real question is not: “Is this material sustainable?” but: “What evidence allows us to call it sustainable?” #SustainableTextiles #ResponsibleDesign #Textiles #Sustainability #CircularEconomy eco-business.com/press-relea…

Can denim embrace innovation without losing the authenticity that defines it? US Denim Group’s #SS28 collection explores this balance through linen and TENCEL™ blends, lightweight constructions, innovative weave structures and naturally aged finishes. As @SourcingJournal and @WWD highlight, the direction reflects a shift toward material responsibility, comfort, and commercial relevance. 🔗 wwd.com/sourcing-journal/sj-… For textile designers, innovation extends beyond fibre substitution: fibre —> weave —> texture —> performance —> silhouette —> longevity Perhaps the future of denim lies not in abandoning its heritage, but in reinterpreting authenticity through responsible material innovation. /// In You Should Smile More, Matsuyama Miyabi presents a surreal composition in which a woman appears to paint a smile onto a disembodied face, transforming an everyday social expectation into an unsettling visual metaphor. The muted colour palette, delicate linework and contrast between realistic facial features and stylised surroundings reflect her Neo-Ukiyo-e aesthetic. The artwork can be interpreted as a critique of imposed happiness and the expectations surrounding feminine beauty, questioning whether a smile expresses genuine emotion or conceals psychological discomfort. – at Sunderland, England

Fashion's circularity crisis is not simply a failure of recycling technology; it is a failure of systems integration. As @wef highlights, only around 1% of used textiles globally are recycled back into textile products, while nearly two-thirds of fibre production relies on oil-based #polymers. The challenge extends far beyond consumer behaviour. A genuinely circular textile economy requires three interconnected transformations: 1. Economic viability: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), traceability and policy incentives that make repair, reuse and #recycling competitive. 2. Social inclusion: A just transition that recognises and supports textile recovery workers, particularly within informal economies. 3. Material innovation: Regenerative bio-based textiles designed for durability, reuse and responsible end-of-life management. For designers, the implication is fundamental: material innovation —> responsible production —> traceability —> recovery —> systemic circularity Perhaps fashion's most pressing challenge is no longer inventing sustainable alternatives, but building the economic, technological and social systems that allow them to succeed at scale. Can circular fashion exist without systemic transformation? #CircularFashion #TextileInnovation #CircularEconomy #Sustainability weforum.org/stories/climate-…

When AI can generate a fashion image in seconds, what happens to the creative process behind photography? As @luxiders explores, AI is reshaping fashion photography from creative planning and post-production to questions of authorship, employment and authenticity. For designers and visual practitioners, photography is more than the final image. concept —> art direction —> lighting —> styling —> collaboration —> visual narrative AI can reproduce aesthetics, but does generating an image necessarily replicate the human experience of creating one? Perhaps the future of fashion photography isn't about who produces the image faster, but whose creative vision gives it meaning. Technology should expand creativity, not make its creators invisible. #FashionPhotography #CreativeAI #Photography #AI 🔗 luxiders.com/how-is-ai-chang…
