Your developer built the product. But what do your agreements say about who owns the IP?
Payment, possession and ownership are not always the same thing.
Review the agreements behind the work your business relies on.
More on Friday.

My mum did not know she's watching AI videos.
Madam asked, "They don't indicate it anymore?" 🥹
Mummy, we can hear it's AI. 🤣💔

Founders: do you know who owns the code your business depends on?
Or have you simply assumed it's the company?
A payment record can show that you paid for development.
It may not, on its own, establish all the intellectual property rights your company needs.
Don't overlook co-founders, freelancers, consultants and other contributors.
Review the arrangements that apply to each person's work.
Founder homework: Make a list of everyone who contributed to your product.
For each person, identify the agreement governing their work and check what it says about intellectual property.
Your developer built the product.
Does your company actually own it?
Imagine spending months building a software product, paying your developer, and finally getting ready to raise funds.
Then someone asks:
“Can you demonstrate that your company owns the intellectual property in this product?”
And you realise you haven't properly checked.
You have the product.
You have the invoices.
You have the payment records.
But have you checked the agreements?
Who owns the code under the relevant agreement?
Were the intellectual property rights properly addressed?
Did every person who contributed to building the product have clear terms governing their contributions?
These are not questions to leave until an investor asks them.
Paying someone to build your product does not, by itself, settle every question about intellectual property ownership.
The legal position depends on the applicable law, the nature of the working relationship and the relevant agreements.
So, founders, here is your homework:
Identify everyone who contributed to building your product. Then review the documents governing their work and the company's rights to what they created.
Don't wait until due diligence to discover an ownership problem.
Build the product. Document the rights. Be ready to prove your position.

If nothing in your business makes you doubt yourself, you’re not playing big enough.

In the last 3 years, the work we’ve done @workwithlenora has birthed some incredible opportunities for our clients.
We’ve watched clients go on to work with NASA, collaborate on Guinness World Records projects, relocate, land new jobs, bag business partnerships, get promoted to General Manager at a multibillion-naira company etc.
It’s been so beautiful to witness. 🥹
And somewhere in all of this, we realised that the work we do as a strategic comms and reputation management company is: helping people build influence from the work they do.
So we made something!🥳
Our first-ever playbook, “Build Your Influence in 100 Attempts”, is a little piece of everything we’ve learned about becoming known, trusted, and sought after for the work you do.
The idea is pretty simple. Wherever you are on the influence scale, you can make intentional attempts to move higher.
And because we want more people to experience what’s possible when they learn to build influence, we’re giving it away for FREE!
It goes live tomorrow at Moonshot. 🥹
If you’d like a copy, just lmk in the comment & Our team reps will find you at the National Theatre tomorrow.
Speak soon!🥳✨
