Beginning in Fall 2027, every concentration in Southern Seminary’s PhD program will be offered in a modular format. As Dr. Mohler explains, this change comes straight from Southern’s founding vision. From the beginning, the seminary has aimed to offer the highest level of theological scholarship in service of the church, and to make that scholarship as accessible as possible. The modular PhD lets us do both. A pastor can come to campus, complete two seminars in a single week, and be home to preach on Sunday. A student preparing for the classroom pursues the same degree, under the same standard, for the same purpose: to strengthen the church. For Dr. Brian J. Vickers, ministry begins with knowing and rightly handling the Word of God. Whether students are preparing for pastoral ministry, missions, counseling, or teaching, their ministry will be shaped by how they understand and communicate Scripture. Dr. Vickers wants his students to leave the classroom with tools they can use for the rest of their lives, from careful exegesis and biblical interpretation to sound theology. Yet beneath it all is a deeper conviction: Scripture is the living Word of God, exposing our hearts and driving us back to Christ. Get to know Dr. Vickers, a teacher committed to passing on what he has received and helping students build their ministry on the Word of God.

“We know that the Lord will provide because we know that the Lord has provided.” In today’s chapel, Dr. Daniel Stevens, Associate Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Boyce College, preached from Genesis 22 on Abraham’s faith, obedience, and trust in the character of God. And we have even greater reason to trust Him. The Lord has provided His Son, and He will faithfully provide all we need.

The Great Commission is at the heart of what we do at Southern. Last night, students gathered for Great Commission Night to hear from faculty about this year’s mission trips through the Bevin Center. Students had the opportunity to learn about each trip, ask questions, and connect with the faculty who will lead these trips.
