Forced use of real-time comms and forced open-plan co-location is often motivated by managerial surveillance, i.e. “I want to be able to see your every action on company time”. Might as well go and work in a cotton mill.

Early on, many startups want to hire generalist that doesn't require much management. As companies scale more management is introduced, and they start hiring specialists. Is there a way to grow a company that doesn't leave early employees unhappy about the change?

My argument is that if your senior engineers aren't mentoring, they aren't actually doing the work of a senior engineer.

Don't "work harder." Instead:
Cut away distractions.
Stop doing fake work.
Ask for help.
Plan.
Solicit criticism.
Automate what can be automated.
Engage your mentors.
Exercise.
Get more sleep.
Whatever you do, don't "work harder." It's pretty much never the answer.

Ah 2018.
Scrum means "Waterfall but we don't have time for analysis".
Kanban means "Scrum, but we don't have time for sprint planning".
Agile means "We have no process, but we do use JIRA extensively"

Fullstack developers are awesome! How they debug React props? Just console.log them right from JSX:
const Component = () => (
<div>
{console.log(this.props)}
<SomeOtherStuff />
</div>
);
I’d never though that it could be that simple!

My view is that *all* teams should do enough up front design to (1) understand the structure of what they are building, (2) create a shared vision for the team, (3) identify and mitigate the highest priority risks. In both cases, it seems rather wasteful to start writing code, without a clear goal of what you're trying to achieve. Literally a few minutes of thinking and drawing can save you days of programming and refactoring. A little up front design can add a lot of value!
