Two things can be true at once - readers should do their best to interact with fics so writers know their efforts are appreciated and writers need to understand what an archive means, how fandom works & transient nature of digital media and why readers may have copies of fics.

Referring to kudos, bookmarks and comments as the currency of fandom is so interesting to me. You're not being paid - in any form.
Capitalism has rotten your brains. You are being appreciated and complimented. Those are NOT payments for your labour.
Your work is not a product.

no hate to op but genuinely none of the people asking this question are old enough/knowledgable in fandom history enough to remember WHY fic drives exist. they’re literally created to avoid fic purges from decimating fundamental texts to the fandoms

As an author: if you don't want your work to be downloaded, don't put it on the site with download option.
To the readers: when all is back make sure to drop a kudos or a comment to the things you read and enjoyed. You don't owe it by law but you do owe it by common courtesy

last night when ao3 was down i was like damn ao3 down i guess i’ll go to bed and it will be back in the morning. and then i woke up to the gaping maw of despair

if ao3 means so much to you and is such a big part of your daily life that you feel the weight of its absence now, let it also be a reminder about the importance of leaving kudos and comments even if its just a simple "i loved this!" to show writers you care about their hard work

Idk i just feel like when ao3 is back up I need everybody to be heaps more graceful towards fic writers because if two weeks without their works is painful then maybe we shouldn't be discoursing weekly about how much you think they suck at writing.

created a communal drive if anyone has fics downloaded they want to add! be sure to create folders and label accordingly
i JUST watched RE and was looking forward to reading bloodymary/RE crossovers so if anyone has those i'll be forever grateful drive.google.com/drive/folde…
so i download every single fic i read and never delete them, and have fics saved from the last 6 years of reading fanfic for all kinds of different fandoms.
so i'm working on putting that into a community drive if you guys want to check it out
