debugging strategy: rule things out

ALT title: rule things out At the beginning of debugging, it can feel like the whole program is suspicious. So you have to narrow it down! person (thinking): I'm really confused, but I can at least check if the server returned the right HTTP response here.. person (thinking): that response looks good! the server isn't the problem! note: don't worry: we're assuming that was the only request being made. Otherwise this wouldn't be a safe conclusion :)

Some people get very upset when they learn that I don't care about languages, I care about getting things done.

What many sw engineers don't realize:
The majority of jobs do not hire you to write the highest quality code or produce the cleanest architecture.
They hire you to solve their business problems very efficiently. Sometimes this means high-quality code. Sometimes not at all.

I was invited to give an MLK speech today and a small number of members of the group hosting me wrote and then leaked emails opposing my giving this speech, as it dishonored Dr. King for me to do so. They called me a "discredited activist" "unworthy of such association with King"

2/ Being smart or good at what you do does not give you the right to be a jerk.
Empathy as an engineer is a superpower.
Caring about those you work with will do more for your career than writing beautiful defect-free code.

Lots of people ping me for advice about becoming a Principal/Distinguished/Über engineer.
Step 1: Stop aiming for the title. It’s likely not what you actually want
Step 2: Understand big titles are about influence more than tech
Step 3: Figure out how to increase your influence

not only should you be allowed to google during a tech interview, but that should be a skill you're allowed to display; it shows how well you can ask questions, augmenting your ignorance of details, etc. googling lets you thicken the arms of your T-shaped skillset.

Being a principal engineer means just trying to get everyone to choose more boring technology choices.

Lots of people are rediscovering and re-sharing this post this morning, so I’m putting it again here.
Listen to @esglaude. Really take in his words.
The work we have ahead of us is deep, and transcends elections. It always has been. And we are called to do it.

When I first started my career, I thought being a stellar software engineer means writing correct, performant, and elegant code, having deep understanding of programming languages & frameworks & operating systems & networking & databases, etc.

If you’re employed in tech right now, you should be tipping EXTREMELY well to everyone delivering takeout, bringing you groceries, cutting your hair, cleaning your house, etc. We’re in a very tenuous time and service workers need all the support you can give.

If you're wondering what "P-four-nines" means, it's the latency at the 99.99th percentile, meaning only one in 10,000 requests has a worse latency. Why do we measure latency in percentiles?
A thread about how how it came to be at Amazon...

Was in a conversation about some service refactoring and the guy said “mean latency was a bit worse, but our P-four-nines was rock-solid and only twice the mean. Customer loved it.” #CloudThinking

Software engineer (quoting Fred Brooks): The programmer, like the poet, works only slightly removed from pure thought-stuff. He builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination.
