My manager docked six hours from my timesheet. The note said, "Overtime appears padded." I looked at the line for a while. Then I said, "Okay," and walked back to my desk. That night, I stopped at the security desk on my way out. The guard who works nights keeps a paper sign-out sheet next to his monitor, a clipboard with a pen on a string, because the badge system is "unreliable." I asked him, "Do you keep the old ones?" He said, "In the drawer. Every one since I started." The next morning, I asked if I could photocopy the last three months. He handed me a thick folder and said, "Knock yourself out." There were forty-four pages. My name was on thirty-one of them, with the time I left. Most were between 8:40 and 9:30pm. I circled each of mine in blue. Then I went to the six dates my manager had cut, and I paper-clipped those pages together on top. On Friday, I walked into his office while HR was already sitting there for something else.
