I’ve written an essay about why 1950s Ireland had some of the highest institutionalisation rates in the world. Hopefully you find it interesting. (Link in reply.)

What in God's name is going on with Britain's energy system? Who is to blame? Why is NetZero hitting the skids? A few thoughts, link below.

There is nothing socialist about a system of free movement that is used by multi-nationals to undermine wages. WATCH my Brexit speech today.

🧵Am struck by how quickly the thermostatic flip in public opinion on tax and spending seems to have happened this Parliament. In 2024, Britons prioritised investing in public services over cutting tax (54% - 30%). Now, that’s flipped: 49% choose tax cuts, 36% public services

AI productivity gains are showing up, but only in ~15% of jobs. The three heaviest AI adopters (information, professional services, finance) went from a 2.2% productivity trend to 5.0% since 2022. The rest of the economy: 0.9% to 1.4%.

It's wild that, in the 18th century, 15%-20% of convictions in London resulted in the death penalty. Justice before the advent of prison was very expeditious. This is from The Laissez-Faire Experiment by W. Walter Hanlon.

This comes from a new book by Nick Fishwick, which is a fascinating bit of social history. Nick has raided the archives of dozens of clubs and written a fascinating social history of English football and how it shed the trappings of Edwardian conservatism

My guess is that privatisation and contracting out increased bureaucracy, because it creates the need for new bureaucratic apparatuses to monitor private contractors and manage things at one remove that were previously done directly

This misunderstands the geographic fracturing of British politics since the 2024. Due to the catastrophic failures of the 2019-24 Tory governments over immigration the populist right are now a permanent feature of British politics based on geography, age & social class.
As I predicted, Reform couldn't professionalise, peaked too soon, and once it's polling 3rd for long enough, a lot of Conservative-Reform switchers are going to want to come back and back the stronger horse, leading to a death spiral for Reform.

The Pont Neuf (1872) crowds Paris's oldest bridge with parasols, carriages and midday glare. Renoir worked from a café's upper floor while his brother Edmond stopped passersby with questions, holding them still long enough to sketch. Edmond appears twice. #artbots #renoir

The volume of propaganda pumped out by the BBC—even, as we now know, unto the embedding of government staff inside the corporation—is gobsmacking in itself, but it also exposes the fatuousness of people who obsess about GBNews.
BREAKING: BBC forced to take down its education website used by millions after it was found to contain all sorts of devices and articles promoting the Labour Party, leftist politics, as well as ‘extreme views on migration and Net Zero’ (via @DailyMail) dailymail.com/news/article-1…
