I’ve just come off a Unison picket line for striking Camden traffic wardens. They were privatised by Camden Council years ago. I was on their picket lines in 2012. They work 42.5 hours a week on low pay. They are striking for an extra £2 an hour and to have their leave entitlement the same as the council workers, which means an extra 7 days. The company is NSL, whose top manager is on £619,000 - £330 an hour. Some wonderful supporter brought a solidarity chocolate cake to the picket line. The traffic warden service should be brought back in house. Solidarity. @unisontheunion

I’ve just spent a great 24 hours in Oslo. But 2 of those hours were spent in the passport queue in & out. It’s one thing to blame Brexit, but when announcements said “have all your documents ready to speed up the queue” (as if it was the passengers fault) it was the last straw.

What an incredible moment. For 35 years, Asif Hasan has given children the chance to grow up, and families the chance to make memories they might otherwise never have had. Seeing him surrounded by those whose lives he has changed says it all. Thank you, Asif, for everything you've done. You represent the very best of our NHS.
World-leading cardiac surgeon Asif Hasan was surrounded by the children who received the gift of life thanks to his unerring skills at the emotional climax of another memorable Pride of Britain ceremony. 🥹 Now 70 years old, Mr Hasan has just retired after 35 years of service at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, but just after receiving his Lifetime Achievement Award, he had an extra special surprise: a cast of patients who would not be alive without him. ❤️

Higher education in this country is at risk on a scale we have never experienced before. The future of our young people is being put at risk and the potential of our economy is being jeopardised. It’s time to speak up and demand the investment needed in this jewel in the crown of our society. @ucu
Education. It's ours.

“Whatever you're meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible.” Novelist Doris Lessing was awarded the 2007 literature prize when she was 88 years old. She was and still is the oldest person to receive the award.

“I wasted time, and now doth time waste me,” Dame Judi Dench shares some of the quotes from Shakespeare that mean the most to her – and tells us why she’s ‘besotted with sonnets’.

Dame Judi Dench played ‘M’ in James Bond for eight years – longer than any actor has played Bond himself. She tells @emmabarnett about being invited to lunch with the real-life head of MI6.

This will be difficult to read for some, but given the geopolitical situation we're in, the government's decision to approve drilling at the Jackdaw gas field is the right one. Here's why ⬇️ Wholesale gas prices have reached a four-year high. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has shown again how quickly global supply can be disrupted, and how exposed we are when we depend on other people's gas. After Russia invaded Ukraine, it was families here at home who felt the cost. With the Strait of Hormuz blocked, the pressure on global energy supplies is only getting worse. We'll need gas for years yet. No economist, minister or energy specialist will deny that. The climate concerns are real too, and I agree that new fields cannot become an excuse to slow down on renewable energy. But a credible transition needs a secure pathway to get there. *Security of supply is not the opposite of net zero.* And here's the environmental contradiction: gas that is liquefied, shipped across the sea and then turned back into gas at home has around *three times the production and transport emissions of gas from the North Sea. An insane practice!* The choice being made now, and it's the right choice, is whether more of the gas we need is produced here, by British workers on proper wages and with lower production emissions than imported LNG, or shipped in from overseas. Leaving our own gas in the ground while importing gas doesn't help the planet. It risks simply moving the jobs, the tax revenue and the emissions somewhere else. 🙄 This is a Labour argument. Our movement was built by people who did the hard graft that kept this country going. We often criticise Thatcher for destroying the mining and steel industries. We need to be careful not to do the same to a critical industry in the midst of a dangerous geopolitical moment. I know what the North Sea means to the workers and families who have built their lives on this industry. In my view, a proper transition away from oil and gas means the jobs of tomorrow should arrive before the jobs of today disappear. It also means being realistic about the speed of transition and making sure the skills built in offshore oil and gas are carried over into renewables, rather than written off. This must be done carefully, balancing energy security with the development of alternative sources of energy. In the more dangerous world in which we live today, *energy security is national security.* Diversifying our energy supply builds resilience, reduces our vulnerability and makes us more independent. Today's decision recognises that.
🚨 BREAKING: The Government has officially approved the Jackdaw gas field for North Sea drilling It's the UK’s largest known untapped gas reserve and will start to supply gas to British homes and businesses from the end of this month

We are so sad to learn of the passing of the pre-eminent Scottish poet, Douglas Dunn, whom Faber published for over fifty years, a poet others admired, turned to, learnt from and loved. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Remembering my dear colleague & friend, the poet Douglas Dunn, who died on Friday. One of the greats. Colourful, gruff & very kind. Though he was v private, his poetry ought to be everywhere in Scotland’s public places.

FRANCE 🇫🇷 : A heartbreaking scene😢. A business owner desperately pleads with looters and vandals to leave her shop alone. Her livelihood is being destroyed before her eyes. No business owner should have to endure this.
