🚨Our book is on preorder🚨 In Beyond Woke and Anti-Woke, we plot a third way between liberals who deny the existence of social justice ideology and anti-woke polemicists who fail to use academic methods. This area deserves a serious research agenda. thepathnottaken.net/p/our-ne…

Indeed and think how much quicker things would be too. Sometimes, the glacial pace of peer reviews forces early career researchers out of the sector...
We should rethink the role of human judgment in the review process. Human expert should have a role, but it's no longer about writing 1,500-word essays to summarize findings, check proofs, and so on. On top of that, any journal that forbids AI usage in the review process should reconsider their position.

I remember Thatcher resigning (November 1990) and being told about the end of communism (1989-1991), but not sure which is the oldest memory!
What is the oldest political news story you can remember? For me it's Joe Biden being selected as Obama's VP.

Interesting and timely new dataset available, tho if you are seeking to generalize from this, 1) the selection of cases may potentially err on the side of confirmation bias and 2) "extremism" is defined as anti-democratic not anti-regime. But...we may steal some questions for the next wave of the WVS. Open access: nature.com/articles/s41597-0…

Whatever one thinks of The Canary, this feels like the end of an era. Remember how influential the site was from about 2015-19? Another Angry Voice was a similar site which people shared all the time and, ahem, had some interesting takes.

People talk about written and oral communication as equivalent, but they’re not. Writing is *far* superior: it improves your thinking, makes a permanent record of it, and helps you to actually extend your ideas by allowing you to move onwards.

Yes, a good decision; the opening ceremony is non-political and the poem is unambiguously political.
Original brief was poorly defined by Senedd Commission but decision not to read the poem at the cermonial opening seems justified? Obvious question re argument that you can't ban it as "the Senedd is political" is: would that hold if poem was right-coded rather than left-coded?

Don't think I've ever been so upset about a sporting event; but not sure we'd have won the final!

In the cases of both Nathan Cofnas and Sally Rooney, some people argued that Cofnas and Rooney's opposition to the freedom of speech of others meant they should lose their own freedom of speech. But liberal-democratic rights don't work like this; they're universal!

Not good! And earlier this year, the prestigious V-Dem index also downgraded US liberal democracy...

🚨 New publication alert: Do Americans change their attitudes toward "culture war" groups when these groups shift how they vote in presidential elections? In a word, 𝐧𝐨. πŸ‘Ž An important case of null results, we find no clear shift in attitudes, either for better or for worse.

Posted about football yesterday and had forgotten *quite* how acutely supporting a team skews one's ability to reason about matters of justice. The movement of political engagement towards the model of football fandom continues to be very alarming!

Watching a prime time Polish news programme and the presenters started by asking their guest (a literary critic) whether she preferred continental or British philosophy. Difficult to imagine such a question/interview in our dumbed down mass media...
