I’m currently allowing myself to be tired. Allowing myself To relax. Allowing myself to just be. It’s harder than I ever imagined. I’ve never allowed myself to do any of that before…

A follow-up to yesterday’s post, which brought to mind this via The Mindful Athlete: “Water responds rather than ‘reacts.’ It literally flows. It’s powerful, yet it yields to the lay of the land rather than exerting unnecessary force. It actually gets its force through yielding.”

When determining the size or complexity of a new habit ask yourself, "What can I stick to—even on my worst day?" Start there. Master the art of showing up. Then advance.

Why is the practice of training awareness so important? An analogy my mentor shared with me: When the phone rings, do you have to answer it? In other words... When a thought enters your mind, do you have to entertain it?

When asked, “what’s the psychology of the greats?” : this picture captures so much. It’s a full commitment to mastery / bringing all of themselves to it / they are “in it” and support others who understand the uncommon path. Love takes many forms. This one has an amazing contour

Feedback is a gift. But you need to train for it. Untrained minds will hear criticism and feel that we under performed and we're inadequate. Trained minds are able to split out the constructive feedback and criticism, and use the feedback to improve.

A quick and easy tip for building habits that last: Pick a standard time and place to do it. It’s easier to wake up knowing “I exercise at 4pm” than to decide each time when to fit a habit into your day. If it’s already decided, all you need to do is show up.

Know what you want. Follow a trajectory where what you want is a possible outcome. Build a system to incrementally improve your ability to follow that trajectory. Trust yourself. Enjoy the outcomes. Repeat.

It's not making mistakes that causes failure. It's the time we spend ruminating about them instead of studying how to avoid them. It's not success that causes complacency. It's the time we fail to spend studying the conditions that fueled success and learning to recreate them.

The bad days are more important than the good days. If you... - write - exercise - meditate - cook - whatever ... when you don’t feel like it, then you maintain the habit. And if you maintain the habit, then all you need is time.

If you are feeling overrun by emotions — sadness, frustration, anger, anxiety — acknowledge the emotion. Research suggests that the simple act of labeling an emotion can discharge the potency of that feeling. Amazingly simple and incredibly powerful.
