A long read on the ‘national emergency’ of violence against women and girls and whether the Premier League could do more.

Leagues elsewhere in Europe have competition-wide campaigns against it.
Charities say football is a space where a huge number of men and boys can be engaged.
The government has recognised the value of using football in the fight.
So, could the Premier League do more to combat violence against women and girls?

Michael Carrick admitted that Manchester United have “lost our way”, as he opened his press conference on Friday with a five-and-a-half-minute monologue.
Before taking questions ahead of Saturday’s visit of Bournemouth in the Premier League, Carrick addressed the assembled media with a speech in which he acknowledged that the club has “lost its way” but said he “totally convinced we will get it back”.
Carrick admitted the club’s form has nosedived after “five months of relative success” at the tail end of last season and said it was his responsibility to build a team that supporters could be proud of.

Wrote this for @TheAthleticFC on what a Manchester United style of football means, what different people want it to mean, and whether people have faith in that idea any more. Free-to-read link here: nytimes.com/athletic/7713702…
Erik ten Hag said this week that Manchester United demands "adventure football", a style of play that is attacking and dynamic.
With Bruno Fernandes criticising the team's tactical setup, Michael Carrick is the latest head coach finding himself wrestling with how a United team 'should' play.
Do they need a defined identity or is that holding them back?

Michael Carrick goes into Bournemouth game leading #MUFC, with execs understanding a complex job. Nobody is making predictions beyond that.
Eddie Howe has most compelling case for some at club, if change.

This is what we’re hearing about Manchester United's coaching situation.
■ Carrick to continue in immediate term
■ But club privately weighing up options
■ Howe has most compelling case for some
■ Nagelsmann spoken of, Conte interested but would want reassurances, Emery highly regarded

I’m sick of United being everybody else’s punchbag, sick of our name justifying even greater elation when rivals beat the club I love. How the mighty have fallen. And that performance was an affront to the name of Manchester United.

Michael Carrick is expected to give his press conference ahead of this weekend's Premier League game against Bournemouth, with Manchester United insisting it is business as usual.
Carrick is the focus of acute attention following his team’s 4-1 defeat by Como in the Champions League, which left this season’s results at two wins in 11 games.

Michael Carrick now in peril but issues at #MUFC run far deeper. Glazers foundation for crumbling skyscraper; Ratcliffe gives unique challenges; Berrada, Wilcox + City links open to scrutiny.
Only run of results since INEOS arrived is interim Carrick ⬇️

Michael Carrick was given the permanent job in large part because he allowed fans and players to dream of Champions League football.
That reality is now a nightmare.
Yes, there are injuries, but this was a joyless, limp and timid performance that goes beyond any availability.
Manchester United were stretched past breaking point off the ball, were left to chase shadows, were careless and lacking quality in possession, and were completely outplayed.
A competition that was supposed to be a chance for Manchester United to build their squad and re-establish their reputation in Europe is turning instead into a semi-regular opportunity for further humiliation.

I was about to tweet a joke about Manchester United improving on last week by not conceding inside one minute but in the time it took me to write it out they'd conceded inside three
