#OnThisDay in 1986, Experimental Breeder Reactor-II performed the Inherent Safety Demonstration Test and proved that #nuclear power plants could be designed to be inherently safe from severe accidents. #70yearsofINL

This thread based on these posters by @darth. I don't really want to make more of these so please support clean energy portfolio standards in your state 🙂⚛️

GREAT but sad thread. Too many of these shut down before their time.
A thread of decommissioned commercial nuclear reactors in the US as Avenge the Fallen posters

Feeling very relieved today that construction will continue at Vogtle

This is how you get new reactors out into the world @paperreactors.
Spend a little less time in the lab and a little more time out on the streets!

Hey @paperreactors, want to bring any of your designs into the real world?
Suggest you take advantage of this resource.
BACK IN BUSINESS: After a more than 20-year hiatus, @INL's Transient Reactor Test Facility is up & running! The facility tests nuclear reactor fuels and materials under extreme conditions & is prepping for a big experiment. Learn more ➟ go.usa.gov/xUSgm #NewEnergyRealism
Real. Reactors.
⚛️⚡In 1951, Experimental Breeder Reactor No. 1 near @INL became the world's first power plant to produce electricity using atomic energy.
🗣️🎶 It's worth singing about. (Hat tip to @Gen_Atomic) #FlashbackFriday #FridayFeeling

Lunch time EST... If you haven’t seen it, read Pool Reactors 2 over lunch! ansnuclearcafe.org/2018/08/0…
Will Davis (@atomicnews ) gives another great look at some of the realest of real reactors:

Vídeo muy chulo del reactor de investigación del MIT. Atención a los elementos combustibles, la sala de control y esos dosimetros "vintage" tipo boli, entre muchos otros detalles. Lástima que en España perdiéramos esta oportunidad para estudiantes e investigadores...
Take a tour of an operating research reactor! This is very cool.

Yes of course you technically can refuel once every 30 yrs & transport instantaneously... Remember what Rickover said about paper reactors. Take anything said by folks who haven't done QA, who don't have a tab at the NRC (or other) and who haven't made fuel with a salt shaker.

Then check out this article by Will Davis (@atomicnews) for a deeper dive on the history, including some awesome photos. Some nice schematics too (cc: @paperreactors).

Nothing simple about making electricity. These are just some of the inventions to help make nuclear work.
Another good thing about #realreactors:
They create real jobs. xitter.cf/NEI/status/10117114560…
