Hugely important transatlantic intervention here from Meta workers, underscoring serious foul play from the Trumpian-Bolsonaroian far-right in the Brazilian presidential election
This is an important and brave message from workers at Meta, where the CWU have members. If the allegations are true that big tech firms have been suppressing the voice of @LulaOficial and ignoring extreme right-wing disinformation, everyone who believes in fair play should be seriously concerned. American tech billionaires must not be allowed to interfere in democratic elections - the future of Brazil must be decided by the Brazilian people alone.

Walzer gets it backwards (again): Israel’s war on Gaza did not become unjust because of its cruelty; it was unjust from the beginning as a modality of a politically, morally and legally untenable occupation. It has always been wrong to think an unjust war could be waged justly.
Michael Walzer published “Just and Unjust Wars,” an attempt to delineate the rights and wrongs of warfare in both its causes and its conduct, in 1977. In the nearly 50 years since, no other book on the subject has matched its influence. The precepts are not complicated: it is just to defend your country from an invasion and it is unjust to invade a country that has not attacked you—although Walzer does allow for exceptions, mostly for humanitarian causes. It is just to assume certain risks to avoid civilian casualties and it is unjust to bomb towns indiscriminately to compel an enemy to surrender. The justice of going to war—what philosophers call jus ad bellum—is separate from jus in bello, the justice of how a war is fought. The war in Gaza has made Walzer rethink one of the book’s fundamental principles. “The wall between jus ad bellum and jus in bello, which had sustained his theory for almost half a century, was no longer sturdy,” Jordi Graupera writes. As Walzer said to him, “There is a sense in which the carnage of Gaza, the ongoing carnage, simply made the war unjust.” Read about why a philosopher of war is now reconsidering his seminal work: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/T7…

UK higher education burning to the ground isn't quite in the spirit of OU expansion to be fair xitter.cf/georgeeaton/status/211…
The list sent by Harold Wilson to his cabinet of “little things that mean a lot”, including the protection of pubs, concessionary fares for the elderly, empty office blocks and “the future of the pint”. Echoes of this in Burnham’s small but popular policies today.

Whatever you think of SfL, this is sub-kiwifarms shit
StatsForLefties is a well run account. Professional graphics, very regular content, high engagement. It should be reason enough to strip the out of work benefits from the person who runs it. She is obviously talented and very clearly isn’t incapable of employment.

Easily forgotten now but there was an explicit (some may say ideological) rejection of the need for more social housing at the time, as per the 2016 decision to not build any additional stock over and above replacement rates manchestereveningnews.co.uk/…

This looks like a red herring. The rules set by Osborne meant that large developers were always likely to benefit, most importantly the need to lend out at commercial rates

The real issue is how the state stepped in to socialise the risks of private money after the financial crisis, and the ways in which actual local control of resources was sacrificed to that

Like they are all, every last one of them, resentful about their woman coworkers. Every time. And they have chip on their shoulder about their personal struggle being discounted because they're white. Every time.

It is so strange when white cis men, especially ones who are psychoanalytically informed, cannot detect that they have a bias when they start talking about liberal PMC culture. I just stare and I'm like "is this a bit? How do you not know you're inside the problem?"

NEW: Met Police assessing this as potential support for a banned group "We have been made aware of an X post on Thursday, 15 October referencing Palestine Action. It is in the process of being assessed to determine whether any further police investigation may be required."
God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action. Sounds like Adam would have all our books swept off the shelves in a jiffy.

Chat, is it good that the beloved left-wing news site Novara Media, named after the autonomous movement in Italy and born from the student movement in Britain, has people sharing takes identical to Daily Mail hacks... is it good?
Replying to @michaeljswalker
From a prominent website advising people how to apply for PIP with depression. It seems like free therapy and/or a weekly visit from a support worker would be more appropriate/useful than a weekly cash transfer in pretty much all of these cases?
