Coal mining was essential to the industrialisation of countries such as Japan, the UK and the USA. But for the miners, it was an extremely dangerous job, often with very few safeguards. There have been terrible disasters with huge losses of life. The coal mines around Yūbari in Hokkaido, Japan, experienced several major disasters. So many hardworking men never returned home to their families. So many wives and children were left behind. Sixty years ago today, in Aberfan, a small mining village in Wales, there was a terrible disaster. Huge piles of coal waste had accumulated above the village, and the National Coal Board knew there were serious safety concerns. One of these tips was situated above the village school. On 21 October 1966, after heavy rain, a coal waste tip collapsed, engulfing the school and killing 144 people. Of these, 116 were children. The community lost so many of its children that day. Five children were saved by the bravery of Nansi Williams, a school dinner lady. She used her own body to shield the children from the coal waste. They survived, but she died. There were 144 deaths in a disaster in which safety had not been given the priority it deserved. But five children survived because one woman put their safety before her own. I usually teach English, but today I want to teach you a Welsh word: arwres (AR-wress). It means heroine, 勇敢な女性 in Japanese. Nansi Williams was an arwres.

「I think…」、「I would say…」、「In my opinion…」 最後に「I would say…」 I think there is a lot of misinformation about English on YouTube.(弱め) In my opinion, there is a lot of misinformation about English on YouTube.(自分の意見をはっきり述べる) I would say there is a lot of misinformation about English on YouTube.(自信のある意見を、比較的控えめに伝える) 訳: YouTubeには英語に関する誤った情報が数多く出回っていると思う。

Nansi Williams - the heroic dinner lady who died saving the lives of schoolchildren during the Aberfan disaster... On October 21, 1966, a Welsh school dinner lady Nansi Williams threw herself over five children as a wall of coal waste crashed into their school. All five survived. She did not. That morning, children at Pantglas Junior School in Aberfan, Wales, were preparing for their final day before the half-term holiday. Nansi, a local woman who worked in the school dining hall, was collecting dinner money from pupils. Above the village stood enormous mountains of waste from the nearby coal mine. For years, residents had lived beneath them, despite concerns about their stability. At approximately 9:15 a.m., one of those mountains collapsed. Around 150,000 tonnes of coal waste and water surged down the hillside, smashing into houses and engulfing the school. Inside, Nansi saw the danger approaching. She ordered five children to get down, then threw herself over them, using her own body as a shield. The impact killed her. One of the children, Karen Thomas, later recalled how Nansi had jumped on top of them as glass shattered and the wall collapsed. The children initially did not understand that she was dead. They tried pulling her hair to wake her. When rescuers recovered Nansi's body, accounts say she was still clutching a pound note collected for school dinners. The Aberfan disaster killed 144 people, including 116 children. An official inquiry later placed responsibility squarely on the National Coal Board. The catastrophe had been preventable. Nansi had no children of her own. In her final moments, she saved five who belonged to other families. For decades, her extraordinary sacrifice received little recognition beyond the community that remembered her. Now, approaching the disaster's 60th anniversary in October 2026, a campaign to honor her has succeeded. A commemorative Purple Plaque is scheduled to be unveiled in Aberfan on October 30. Five children went home because Nansi Williams never did. #archaeohistories

Great pleasure to plant Sakura Cherry trees😄 at Ysgol Rhyd Y Grug Primary School! 🌸 In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolise the beauty and fragility of life, but also renewal and hope for the future. May these trees, donated by the Sakura Cherry Tree project, stand as enduring symbols of friendship between Wales and Japan!! 🇯🇵❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

🇬🇧イギリス英語「What do you make of...」って何⁉️ 🇬🇧 What do you make of this new restaurant? 🇬🇧🇺🇸 What do you think about this new restaurant? 🇬🇧 What do you make of his English? 🇬🇧🇺🇸 What do you think of his English? 🇬🇧 What do you make of this news? 🇬🇧🇺🇸 What do you think of this news? 「What do you make of...」は、「What do you think of...」
