I'm honoured to have one of my blitz games - a Kalashnikov against the Maroczy Bind - featured on @DanielKingChess's YouTube channel! Even a patzer can create something beautiful, on occasion. Hope you enjoy. #chess #chesspunks youtube.com/watch?v=NvJyuCIb…

Just got an email from a prospective PhD student containing the below. My response: I’m glad you enjoyed my work on [one short, genuine line]. It’s some of my best. As for supervising you, I think [polite refusal with an excuse - don’t mention the applicant’s AI use].

How to play the QGD Tartakower. (Just a nice, accurate game. I had the advantage after c4, but let it slip. Draw.) Conditions: 3+0. Opponent rating: 2000 chessdotcom. (My early c5 makes me more like Kasparov than Karpov or Kramnik. Sorry! @Running18834415) #chess #chesspunks

How not to play the Morra, yet again. Opponent title: CM. Conditions: Simul, 20+60. @Running18834415 would not have rolled over and died so easily. (Was he trying to get me out of book? It was poor, to say the least.) #chess #chesspunks

This is one of my favourite scenes of all time; Stewart is a crucial component. Watching it again today brought a tear to my eye. Stewart’s personal story is inspirational. Let’s do our parts to promote social mobility, as employers or educators. RIP. youtube.com/watch?v=iIbBKRBA…

How to win like Karpov. I dedicate this game to @Running18834415, to tame his wicked ways. My accuracy: 97%. Opponent’s: 95%. But it’s -1 and he flagged. It was mainly a positional matter; no real calculation needed. Conditions: 10 0. #chess #chesspunks

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

It receives considerable funds from right wing individuals such as Ben Delo. It also appears to have a ‘hidden’ ideological agenda. Compare its core three principles with what it actually does. Inter alia, it appears to exist to oppose various equality initiatives.

There is a story they tell about this; roughly, failure to hire on merit (typically) reflects lack of institutional neutrality. However, this is false. They tend to work with a contested - because highly dubious - notion of merit, where it’s reflected by raw grades, etc.

How not to play the Morra, yet again! It is a profound joy to weather the storm, and even more pleasing when one has the chance to deliver a series of tactical blows in response. (“You wanted tactics? Here they are!”) Conditions: 10+0. Opponent rating: Unknown. #chess #chesspunks
