These impressive sculptures have arrived in the heart of New York City, bringing Mexican art, tradition and remembrance to Times Square.
The Catrinas honor traditional Mexican culture and the lives of loved ones who have passed. They will remain on display through November 2, when Times Square will host a free celebration from 4 PM to 9 PM featuring traditional altars, live music, Mexican folk dancing and cultural performances.

La occidentalización de los hombres nativos americanos fue la peor desgracia que les pudo haber ocurrido.

Y ese era el propósito de educar en el siglo XX: amestizar, colocarle la idea a la gente de que eran mestizos por el solo hecho de hablar y estudiar español y les prometían una mejor vida.
Los censos de la época tomaban solo en cuenta la lengua que se hablaba para determinar si un pueblo era mestizo o no. Con ello, a medida que el español avanzaba sustituyendo a las lenguas nativas, el país se fue convirtiendo en “mestizo” y eso era para los políticos, un signo de progreso.
