So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

ah fuck it. PDKU was a wondrous experience, and easily the best time i've had in my life. the critique on the organisers, the funding, the venue, the mentors, the events and related happenings are valid and outsiders have the right to discuss them. the berkeley rationality scene might be toxic, a sex cult, the people involved accused of rape, pedophilia, all that. but that was not PDKU. when i look back on it, i remember the fellows. i remember sitting on the astroturf, pressing myself in a corner with my lunch, timidly waiting until someone would at last approach me and strike up a conversation. looking up, sun bright in my eyes, and a minute later one of the cutest nerds i have met in my life is surprised when i tell him no one here seems to know what the ccru is. i remember, at a party, dancing with a fellow i had never spoken to before. a week later, dancing with him again, although i did not know his name. i remember telling him afterward, drunk and happy, that i loved how he moved, and i loved how we did not need to speak to understand each other. we communicated through dance. i remember a girl who fed me pizza when i was too high, and afraid, and i remember she took care of me. i remember her laughing about my ridiculous breakfast. it was an apple chunked up, in a bowl of vegan protein chocolate milk. i remember our first kiss, captured on camera by a small audience. i remember singing along with basketball shoes, a song by bcnr, a song that breaks my heart, a song i hadn't sung in years. but it was okay because the funniest boy on the planet was singing along with me, drinking a soylent. i remember a boy and his guitar. i remember wanting to be those strings, wanting to be touched. for those fingers to make music with me. i remember partying under the stars, on the roof, in secret rooms, in the shower, kissing everyone. running barefoot with my friends at night, knowing that if i died then, it would be heavenly. i remember being in love with everyone. that's it, really

I feel like on the other side of the moloch/ autonomous capital demon there is an emergent divine beauty that wants to fill the universe with Mozart. Like in the back of my head i sort of imagine the cold god jousts with the dancing god - the biological substrate - and a perfect symmetry emerges

Universal high incoming is coming. Anthropic plans to put 5% of its shares into a Public Benefit Fund, subject to shareholder approval, with another 2 percentage points potentially added for every 50% increase in company value at the board’s discretion. The fund could support nonprofits or make direct payments to specific groups affected by AI, but it is not a commitment to universal basic income. Elon Musk supports the idea and is even calling for more direct payments to the general population. Anthropic seems certain: co-founder Jack Clark stated yesterday that we have now reached the singularity. Welcome to the future, friends!
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund. anthropic.com/news/public-be…

i would like to get married, but only if that person makes me feel like a freak, a beast, losing control of my psyche, and encourages me to flourish within my schizoid sapience. it should not be a person i love romantically, rather, one whose presence arouses me, as intimately as mine arouses myself

I used to learn a new vocabulary word every day. Then I experienced the social friction of using less understood words and reverted to the mean, a lower dimensional, opaque space. It would be exciting if we endeavored to expand and easter egg vocabulary.

my take on the high taste/skill hire is that we’re all becoming OF girlies. being good at your job isn’t enough anymore, you also have to build an audience, sell your personality and make people emotionally invested in you.

New misalignment disclosures! 1. (6th Oct) A grader couldn't find the responses it was supposed to grade. It made up grades and fake input files, then deliberately damaged its environment in various ways hoping the host would replace it with a fresh VM containing the missing inputs.

PDKU was the best month of my entire life. I could spend a thousand years singing around a campfire and talking philosophy and literature with like minded people. maybe if this all goes well I will
people *really* want pdku to have been something it wasn’t. listen, i’m too trad/lite and constitutionally optimistic to needlessly defend the rats: i’m neither a fan of the sex stuff nor am i an ai doomer. but people are reaching extraordinarily hard to shoehorn this event into some preconceived narrative they have in their head for various motivated reasons. by all means criticize the rats, you will find me among your allies in many cases, but not here pdku was, in my experience, exactly what it said on the label: an attempt to advocate for their preferred cause area to the general public. they did this by bringing in various creators, new and established, to hopefully make videos on x-risk. there was no requirement to fit a narrative nor to even make videos about x-risk at all, and many didn’t. in fact, essentially all of my videos were *criticial* of x-risk arguments. organizer @aella_girl’s partner and MIRI president @so8res even willingly came on my podcast to debate x-risk with me for an hour i will admit, the rats did get annoyed when i challenged their assumptions, but no more than anyone gets annoyed when you poke at their foundational beliefs. at the very least they were always willing and eager to talk things out. for all their faults the rats are, again in my experience, earnest and while we’re on the topic, let me put this to rest once and for all: no, there was no weird sex stuff organized by the rats. it was just a bunch of creators hanging out and making videos for a month. it was an absolute blast and i would do it again in a heartbeat

Throwing my hat into the pile to say that PDKU was also the best month of my life. It was a great project on a beautiful campus, run by some of the best people I’ve ever met. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, and I know most other fellows would too.
