I am getting quite tired of these tirades against AI writing, often using derogatory and sweeping terms. I would say that the intellectually lazy thing is to use Pangram for assessing a text rather than doing it oneself. What is missed here is that you can work very intensely with AI to produce a text whilst having the AI write it out. You can provide the key content, and you can iterate back and forth many times until you, as the one taking full responsibility for a text, are fully satisfied. This is not laziness: it is a new, often delightful way of working for many colleagues who want to use their time efficiently and/or produce better texts that fully reflect the stance of the human working with AI. Of course, AI can be used to produce bad texts, but then it is the badness that should be criticized, not the use of AI, just like we should criticize bad human-written texts because of their low quality (and I have seen many of those over the years). nonicoclolasos.com/2026/07/2…

Also there's a lot of conflation here on Pangram: 1. Writing with the help AI and having AI write it 100% for you is not the same folks. 2. As a general reminder, if you write youself and ask AI to fix spelling, Pangram WON'T flag it. 3. If your writing is 100% AI on Pangram, it means you copy pasted and are intellectually lazy. This is why the cope of "Oh I just write my captions with AI" doesn't work because you did not write it!

Sad to hear that this interesting and influential result was most likely made up. How many PhD students have lost years, and perhaps career prospects, working on projects inspired by fraudulent research? Scientific fraud is not just about undue benefits. There are real victims.

I tried to be chill, but Acemoglu’s false statement reminded me too much of the gaslighting I had to deal with to publish my comment Acemoglu et al don’t respond directly to criticisms, and often make up demonstrably false claims to defend themselves, with no accountability

Models are better than humans at identifying certain kinds of errors. Not using the best models for this purpose is research malpractice. Akin to an actuary who refuses to use a computer or calculator to help with arithmetic.
I haven't found an official release from the AEA but I think this is a terrible idea. Let editors and referees make decisions (with whatever tools they want, A.I. included) but the publication process does not need this additional step.

Some back-of-the-envelope math suggests that our org commits >10 faculty FTE to clicking boxes. This doesn’t count any employees other than faculty MDs (of which there are many thousands) and costs $2.5M in salary and $4.5M in foregone clinical revenue. How does this make sense?

A takeaway from the National Bureau of Economic Research meetings: The premium on research that is mainly about computational complexity has dropped sharply owing to AI. The pendulum is swinging back to 'new insights,' 'new mechanisms,' 'new measurements.' Not a bad thing.
