There's a whole genre of Econ navel gazing on this website that responds to basically any discussion about the economy with a blind parroting of the title of Pritchett's essay on 'GDP growth and only GDP growth is enough', however.

In 2026, the Chinese power system is struggling to digest the additions of solar and wind from 2024-25. This will persist into next year, even as growth slows. The share of wind and solar generation in the mix last year (22%+) had already exceeded the level where it's just "free power absorbed into a thermal system". The system will need to be explicitly re-organized around accommodating large volumes of intermittent, non-dispatchable generation.
It's tempting to say: "what's the problem with having too much power? Isn't that basically a good thing?" And it can be, except when you sell that power into a market that wants to price that power according to scarcity. When that happens, power prices can be too low to support further investment, or grids can be physically strained beyond their ability to integrate more.
Beyond this, I have some broader comments about certain frames used in the piece.

I've been thinking about the gap between undergrad and PhD level econ for a while. Here's a quote from the intro to my Understanding Capitalism book. I think we can teach some advanced topics much early, which would dispel some suspicions of dishonesty/ideology in intro classes.

People need to understand that the biggest threat to emissions right now is off grid, inefficient gas. Beyond the tremendous general emissions upside of transmission buildout, if it means more grid-connected gas that is anywhere from like 20-70% fewer emissions than status quo.

What do the Election Commission’s own records reveal about disagreements within the poll panel?

The Election Commission of India is under fire like never before.
The SIR has struck 13 crore names off draft rolls, putting the EC at the centre of intense public debate over its role in deciding who gets to vote — and who doesn’t.
HOWEVER, what nobody knew: through that same period, some of the sharpest questions were being asked from inside.
Out today, after months of work. Our #ExpressInvestigation 🧵

Schools with more white kids often look better on report cards because those kids already arrive with higher scores from home, not because the school itself teaches more. Peter showed in this paper that the boost of the school is basically the same no matter the school's racial mix. The low ratings that NHJ's daughter saw at her high-poverty school mostly reflected who walked in the door, not proof that the school itself was causally worse at educating whoever attended.

Half of the crashes involved a motorcycle. Collisions with motorcycles were, however, infrequent among fatalities, indicating that results from fatalities may not apply to minor and less severe crashes, comprising a vast majority of crash burden. (10/n)

So why does manufacturing look so different from the average private sector firm?
Market power.
We show that Norwegian manufacturing firms have substantial market power in both product and labor markets.
-> Market power really matters for the effects of unionization.

- In other words, income & social development, once closely aligned across states, have pulled apart. Kerala and Gujarat became shorthand for two ways of pairing growth with welfare: Kerala ranks first on HDI but sixth on income, while Gujarat is second on income but 13th on HDI"
