Great advice! and the longer you stay in prestige seeking optionality maximizing roles the lower your optionality becomes to do anything else because you are too expensive and low exp to hire as a head of a function and you wont chose anything less.

Not really a comment on this post in particular - but a piece of general advice to younger people is: being long optionality, in investing or in life, is incredibly costly over time. Consulting is one of those "extend optionality" careers.

“UBI” is obviously nowhere near the panacea many of you seem to think it is. The median left-leaning Westerner isn’t angry at Elon Musk because he can buy a million times more groceries than them. They aren’t upset with Palantir because Peter Thiel can afford to eat a thousand burgers to their one. This whole thing is in large part post-material. It’s the hierarchy & subordination they’re uncomfortable with. They feel their dignity is being trampled and their autonomy progressively diminished – rightly or wrongly they feel politically disenfranchised and stripped of a say over the future. Offering a guaranteed food budget and a pod to spend the night in return for further disempowerment is incredibly tone-deaf and should be expected to provoke more, not less, outrage.

Most disagreement is downstream of the fact that representation necessarily undermines the is/ought distinction
Shouldn’t concentration lead to increased vol of top stocks leading to their lower valuations and subsequent relative selling thereby making it actually a negative feedback loop? Why doesn’t this happen?
This needs to be fixed or it will end in disaster.
Why?
Average Americans buy S&P 500 index ETFs, in part, because Buffett told them to. They were told they would pay very little and get diversification in the 500 best companies on earth to ride out storms.
But as concentrations rise in a very small percentage of those stocks, the risks don’t fall. They rise. If the indices don’t cap the max percentage of any one stock, you essentially are holding a direct bet on that ONE company. In this case, see that when you buy an index of 500 companies, you’re really buying 10 companies with 490 others thrown in.
If there is any market volatility, the lack of diversification could cause massive impairment.
That’s ok if you’re a “professional” and that’s what you are betting on but most ETF buyers aren’t professional stock traders and they will be in for a rude awakening if this isn’t addressed.
Please will everyone stop talking about profit margins they are an arbitrary accounting convention what matters is returns to capital
