Ta-Nehisi Coates’s writing on race fueled a reckoning in America. Now he wants to change the way we think about Israel and Palestine. Read our new cover story now: trib.al/14EyFWS

Le Guin as always
no one should have to "prove" their "value to society." you are here. that is already the most precious fact. any society that demands such "proof" before deeming you worthy of a life is not worthy of you, of the people

just imo but i think a crucial sticking point in public discourse over there last year is many many people’s inability or unwillingness to get into their heads just how many palestinians are imprisoned by israel who have literally not done anything wrong
Israeli journalist Gideon Levy describes the conditions in which 61-year-old Palestinian MP Khalida Jarrar is being held by Israel. She is in total isolation. She has been accused of no crime since she was arrested a year ago. 'Her cell has no windows. There is no air, no fan, only a concrete bed and a thin mattress as well as a toilet that has no water most of the day. This week she told her lawyer that in order to breathe a bit, she lies down on the floor and tries to draw in a bit of air from the crack under the cell door. She doesn't drink much, in order to avoid having to use the toilet, which emits a horrific stench.' More here: haaretz.com/israel-news/twil…

People are pointing out that public infrastructure shouldn’t be expected to make a profit. But the point of this post is that we frequently expect transit and even walk/bike projects to justify themselves by farebox recovery or economic activity and never expect this of highways.
Did you know: The US Interstate Highway System has never been profitable in all the time it's been operating. It actually loses an enormous amount of money every year and can only exist because of massive government subsidy

Americans need to see this so they can understand that Israel isn’t “fighting for its life,” Gaza’s destruction isn’t an “unavoidable consequence of urban warfare,” but that Israel is systematically wiping a city of two million people off the face of the earth block by block.

Doctor: “All of the disasters I’ve seen combined, 40 mission trips, 30 years, Ground Zero, earthquakes. All of that combined doesn’t equal the level of carnage I saw against civilians in just my first week in Gaza” Reporter: Is it mostly children? Doctor: Almost exclusively…

"Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?" disturbingly resonates 180 years later. 3 of 5 ppl in the US are one missed paycheck from being homeless. The odds of someone you know being prison labor for simply being poor just shot up--as did stocks in private prisons today.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court ruled today that cities can punish unhoused people for sleeping in public, even if they have nowhere else to go.  We cannot arrest our way out of homelessness.

On Monday, USAID contractor Alexander Smith resigned after being threatened to choose between resignation & dismissal for preparing a presentation on Palestinian maternal health. This administration is evil - absolutely evil.

While I welcome the Trump conviction, this also is undeniably true:
US Presidents have set up torture sites, staged coups, ordered human experiments, invaded entire countries, ethnically cleansed indigenous peoples, enabled genocides. That the first Presidential conviction ever is over hush money to cover a sex scandal is… very telling I guess

I’ve seen three images in the last few minutes that’ll be with me for the rest of my life. To bomb a refugee camp is an unimaginable horror. Every hand has to be turned to stop this.
There is no good way to perceive this nightmare.

slave labor in Oregon with prisoners for $0.05 per hour. now ask again why our politicians are criminalizing addiction and mental illness and homelessness and poverty... burn it all down.

Everyone keeps leaving out 1985 when students took over Hamilton Hall, renamed it Mandela Hall, demanded the school divest from South Africa over apartheid. It was the longest siege--nearly three weeks-- of the university in its history. No riot police then, either. reuters.com/world/us/columbi…
In 1968, protests at Columbia were bigger and more disruptive. Yet in 2024, the university responded faster and with more violence. The change is due to the militarization of the police and growth of elite private education into more important site of American capital and power.

Today is one of those moments where we have to remember that the cops were not actually defunded in 2020. The ruling class actually doubled down on funding them, to repress us in moments like this.
USC SENDING IN HUNDREDS OF LAPD COPS TO ARREST COLLEGE STUDENTS ON THEIR OWN CAMPUS. This is the state of higher education in America.

We are being asked to be horrified and disgusted that people in this country are protesting this. We are being told - by organizations, institutions, the news media, the Biden administration - that the real threat are those who stand & resist against this depravity.
