Ben “I am the Premier” Carroll nodding along while his master calls women’s rights campaigners nasty and hateful.
We haven’t forgotten that @BenCarrollMP. #SpringSt

I very much regret this decision by the High Court. The ball is firmly in the Parliament of #Australia’s court to correct this historic injustice and affront to the rights of women and girls.
Today the High Court 👨⚖️ refused Sall Grover special leave to appeal Giggle for Girls v Tickle. The legal fight is over. 😤
Parliament must now act. ‼️
Giggle was a women only app. @salltweets built it so women could have a female only online space.
As the law now stands, a woman can be punished in court for running a female only service without the inclusion of men who identify as women.
The courts applied the Gillard government 2013 amendments. They did not invent them. Only Parliament can restore the right of women and girls to single sex spaces, services and sport.
@SenKatyG @MGrahMcIntosh
WRNA stands with Sall Grover. 💪💜 We call on every MP and Senator to amend the Sex Discrimination Act and put sex based rights back into Australian law.
Oh look, the thing that never happens has happened again

If you're an academic (and can prove it with an ORCID), consider signing a petition protesting the University of Ghent's suspension of a postdoc for exposing academic misconduct, a blatant violation of academic freedom (as always, regardless of your agreement with all of the whistleblower's views). johnarmstrongmaths.com/openl… johnarmstrongmaths.com/openl…

Some people pretend to believe that these 12 pages from Arday’s thesis don’t indicate plagiarism
Let me catch up here. Nathan Cofnas is falsely alleged to be a eugenicist and subsequently suspended by a transgender gynecologist—who it turns out is an actual eugenicist?
Trans-identified male Petra De Sutter (Paul), who has been the Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium since 2020, and was formerly a member of the European Parliament, gave a TEDx talk in Brussels in 2018 praising Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" as a vision of a future to aspire to.
In the talk, titled "Tele-Babies," De Sutter, a former gynecologist, praises gene-editing as a moral imperative and quotes Julian Savulescu, who has co-authored an academic paper on "why eugenic selection is preferable to enhancement."
"In the world of Aldous Huxley, procreation is not something that is connected with sexuality or with relationship or family-building anymore. You just go to a clinic or a factory, if you wish, and you give your gametes.
After so many months, you can pick up your child, which has been genetically enhanced and designed according to the features that you want."
De Sutter has previously been accused of a conflict of interest when campaigning to alter laws to permit the surrogacy industry in Europe. He has openly profited from surrogacy practices in the hospital where he worked as a gynecologist, University Hospital of Ghent, and co-developed a surrogacy clinic in India called Seeds of Innocence.

We’ve spent decades trying to make school less demanding so that kids won’t hate it.
The result?
They still hate it, but now they can’t read.

Academic feuds should only be conducted in the traditional way: weirdly passive aggressive footnotes in competing monographs over a period of multiple decades (whoever dies first loses).

I am bewildered, and not very impressed, by the visceral, naked, irrational hatred spat out by some defenders of Jason Arday. If a Cambridge professor is accused of being an unqualified charlatan, the accusation might be racially motivated. On the other hand it might not, depending on the evidence. The correct question to ask is not, ”What is the colour of his skin” but “Is it in fact true that he is an unqualified charlatan?” Please examine the evidence before leaping to the assumption of racism.
As for the idea that journalists “piled in on him” and “hounded him to his death”, most attacks were against Cambridge University. Jason himself was widely regarded as an unfortunate victim of foolish promotion way beyond his ability to cope. In appointing him to a professorship for which he was manifestly unqualified – in ludicrously describing him as “the best in the world” – certain senior members of the university showed a level of patronising condescension towards black people that could fairly be described as racism, while at the same time making him tragically vulnerable to such attacks as came his way.

Pseudologia fantastica
Powerful & fascinating take: the psychiatrist & writer Dr @MaxPemberton looks at Jason Arday...
"The people I’ve met who fit the description of pseudologia fantastica tend not to stop lying. They are seldom cold or calculating. They tend to be charming and, perhaps most importantly, fragile underneath. What strikes me most is how often they appear to half-believe the story they’ve invented. The lie is not really being told to the listener at all, it is being told to the ego of the person telling it. The listener is only there to confirm it.
"...the tales are about suffering that has been overcome, odds that were insurmountable, the diagnosis nobody believed, the childhood that should not have been survived, and then the triumph over all this. It is a far more effective structure for any fantasy, because it makes doubting it feel like an act of cruelty.
"Why do the stories become so extravagant? Part of it is this notion that an audience gets used to them, just as the exponent of the lie does. So what produced gasps last year produces only nods this time, and applause that has stopped coming leaves an empty feeling.
"So the story has to grow, and it grows in whatever direction was rewarded most loudly last time. You can’t backtrack once a story is out there, you can only embellish and elaborate...
"The only person they picture on the other side of their story is somebody looking impressed. A claim is not weighed for whether it will survive scrutiny, it is weighed for whether it will trigger the required impression and response. The claims that do best in that regard are precisely the ones nobody sensible would invent.
"Every fantasist I’ve known kept going with their stories long past the point where anybody was still convinced, because the alternative was to confess it was a sham and allow people to destroy the false identity they had built for themselves, so become a nobody.
"Which is why I don’t feel triumphant about Jason Arday’s downfall. When a world collapses it is a terrible thing to live through, and no less terrible for having been constructed of tissue paper.
"He built it and must answer for it. But he did not build it on his own, and the institutions – not least Cambridge University and the diversity, equality and inclusion industry – that made him their poster boy and handed him the bricks have gone very quiet.
"For that they bear considerable responsibility in this sorry saga and should reflect on it in shame."

“Dawkins’ Law of the Conservation of Difficulty states that obscurantism in an academic discipline expands to fill the vacuum of its intrinsic simplicity”.
The #JasonArday affair is shining a light on the Emperor’s New Clothes in edu-academic writing. And not before time.
Did Jason Arday’s PhD examiners actually read his thesis? And did the electors who appointed him to a Cambridge professorship read his work?
The questions raised by this affair go well beyond plagiarism.
