I think people forget, or weren't there to see, just how big of a deal Skyrim was lore-wise when it first released: - First major time jump in the mainline series (201 YEARS). - The Cyrodillic Empire that served as the backdrop for each prior game is now shattered, weak, barely holding on and at the mercy of its enemies. The Septim dynasy is no more. - Morrowind is all but destroyed in the absence of Lord Vivec, leaving the Dark Elves to wander, suffer in the new hellscape that was their home, or be enslaved by The Argonians of Black Marsh who subsequently invaded. - The High Elves have returned to their haughty and oppressive ways prior to the formation of the Empire, now standing as the clear antagonists of the continent and possessing the upper hand. Skyrim fundamentally rearranged the state of Tamriel that had been the status quo for over 15 years. It was surreal to experience the lead up to this monumental moment in The Elder Scrolls franchise.
