The recent publication for our work on base editing in tomato is available. This was a fun collaboration with Yiping Qi's group at U of Maryland!

Imagine the ability to grow healthier, more flavorful, disease-resistant tomatoes. This may soon become a reality, thanks to Prof. @AsaphAharoni and his colleagues: bit.ly/3vYBOBl @AharoniLab

Eggplant @CropWildRelativ-es contain a treasure trove of genes for tolerance to abiotic stresses, such as #drought. One of the most promising species is Solanum elaeagnifolium, which has been hybridized and introgressed to #eggplant. @CropTrust @noradno @SeedCrop

Nathalie Kaiser closes the #SOLIOM2020 conference talking about "Assessing the contribution of Sli to self-compatibility in North American diploid potato germplasm using KASP markers". They used 5 cycles of selection on some pops. to increase the self-compatibility trait.

#SOLIOM2020 switch now to a small diploid potato inbreeding mini-session, starting with Ernst-Jan Eggers with "The S-Locus Inhibitor gene encodes an F-box protein with a Lectin domain and crucially enables hybrid potato breeding"... self-incompatibility is an important limitation

#SOLIOM2020 @ProhensJaime , presents new populations with new interesting phenotypes. One of the most interesting populations is a MAGIC population. It was develop using a 8-way funnel approach. 421 S3 lines have been phenotyped and genotyped. Old an novel QTLs have been detected

#SOLIOM2020, Yury Tikunov summarises the link between classical genetics & breeding to develop tomatoes with other flavors. The QTL analysis of a new pop revealed a QTL in chr4 associated a phenolic compounds that produce a floral aroma. Nothing new but a new gene pop up: FLORAL4

#SOLIOM2020, Yury Tikunov opens his presentation "The genetic and functional analysis of flavor in commercial tomato: a novel FLORAL4 gene underlies a QTL for floral aroma volatiles in tomato fruit" asking if someone has tasted a tomato with rose flavor? If you did, contact them.

#SOLIOM2020, Zamir: To look for epistasis in the 2000 RILs, screening trials (dry conditions) for different traits. Some regions were found for epistasis between Brix and Yield. They were able to reproduce the results in 2019 and 2020.

#SOLIOM2020, Dani Zamir: Two genetic factors to deal with #epistasis. 1) 200 individuals are not much to detect QTL-QTL interactions 2) Multiple testing penalty that need to be corrected statistically. To fix, new pop (S. pennellii x LEA or TOP) -> BC1 -> BC2 -> [S6] -> 2000 RILs

#SOLIOM2020 moves to the last session: breeding, chaired by H Tai and I Paran. Dani Zamir opens the session with "Exotic Genetic Libraries’ map resistance to Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) to the Tobacco Mosaic Virus locus, TM1". He starts showing the amazing F1 hybrid
