Strengthening Human Rights Protection in Africa: Reflecting on 40 Years of the African Commission
At the 3rd Joint Forum of the Special Mechanisms of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in Dakar, Senegal, PALU CEO, Donald Deya, contributed to discussions on the evolution of the African Commission over the past four decades, highlighting the importance of strengthening the practical protection of human rights through communications procedures, fact-finding missions, urgent appeals and related mechanisms.
He also spotlighted Defending and Advancing Human Rights: A Practical Guide to Advocacy and Litigation Mechanisms in Africa (2026), co-published by PALU and the Pan African Solidarity Network (PASNet), authored by Mwanase Ahmed. The guide offers a practical resource for navigating advocacy and litigation mechanisms across the African human rights system.
As we commemorate 45 years since the adoption of the African Charter and 40 years of its operationalization, strengthening these mechanisms remains essential to advancing accountability, access to justice and the realisation of human rights across Africa.

Defenders Coalition is taking part in the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights #ACHPR89OS.
Yesterday afternoon, the Head of Programmes @GloriaMadegwa1 , addressed the Commission, chaired by Hon. Idrissa Sow where we presented on the situation of human rights defenders (HRDs) in Kenya ahead of the 2027 general elections.
We raised concerns about the continued harassment, intimidation, abductions and criminalisation of the work of human rights defenders, including journalists and the emergence of criminal gangs that threaten security of persons and target divergent voices, and the persistence of femicide and violence against women and girls among others.
Defenders Coalition called for the commission to urge Kenya to guarantee safety and security of human rights defenders and civic actors, address criminal gang violence, and ensure accountability, justice and support for victims and survivors of human rights violations.

During the #HRC61 debate on the most serious human rights situations (item 4⃣ GD) today, we raised the alarm about risks of an internationalisation of conflicts in #Sudan & #SouthSudan and of a regional conflict between #Ethiopia & #Eritrea.
❝ Throughout the Horn of Africa, human rights scrutiny is vital. Mechanisms that are in place, such as the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea and investigative bodies on Sudan & South Sudan, should be extended, and this Council should act to reinstate the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia or establish a new mechanism on Ethiopia. ❞
