A lot of people have been asking me about #Varanasi’s IMAX aspect ratios, so here’s the complete technical breakdown in simple terms. 🎥 SHOOTING • Varanasi was shot using IMAX-certified digital cameras. • The film was primarily shot in 1.90:1. • Some sequences (including the ones you saw in the Varanasi glimpse), totaling more than an hour , were shot in the expanded 1.43:1 format. • No sequence was shot in 2.39:1 CinemaScope. 🖥️ IMAX PRESENTATION • The entire film will be available in 1.90:1 for Digital IMAX venues. • The major portions you saw in the glimpse, shot in 1.43:1, will open up to the full 1.43:1 frame on compatible IMAX GT Laser screens. • This means those sequences will provide a taller, more immersive image on 1.43:1-capable IMAX screens. 🎬 2.39:1 CINEMASCOPE • A separate 2.39:1 version has been prepared for cinemas that cannot screen 1.90:1 or 1.43:1. • This does NOT mean any sequence was shot in 2.39:1. • It is a separate theatrical version for conventional widescreen cinemas. For comparison, Godzilla Minus One was also partially filmed with IMAX-certified digital cameras, with its IMAX presentation using 1.43:1 on IMAX GT Laser screens and 1.90:1 on Digital IMAX venues.
