Discovery often comes from putting familiar pieces in unexpected ways: but bio space is too vast to do that effectively? 🤖 1000s of AI agents helped connect our whole-brain Perturb-seq atlas w literature. w @OpenAI @joyjiao12: more coming! See preprint biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…
GPT-Rosalind surfaced a new lead for drug discovery: could restoring cholesterol transport protect neurons from degeneration? DCTN1 is a gene linked to Perry syndrome, a rare neurodegenerative disorder. In mouse-brain data, disrupting it increased expression of genes involved in making cholesterol. GPT-Rosalind suggested a possible explanation: cholesterol may not be reaching where neurons need it. That gives scientists a specific mechanism to test and, if confirmed, a direction for developing new treatments for neurodegenerative disorders. With @perturbai_tx and @scrippsresearch, a team of thousands of GPT-Rosalind agents worked in parallel, connecting gene-expression results from millions of mouse brain cells with scientific literature in just 32 minutes. We’re now expanding this collaboration to identify new drug targets. openai.com/index/scaling-ai-…

Much of the functional biology encoded in genomes remains hidden in noncoding DNA. In a preprint out today, @pdhsu and team introduce COMPASS, a genomic language model-based approach to systematically map this underexplored sequence space.

Beca Almeida sees AI shaping research across four areas: creating surveys, AI interviews, acting as respondent, and synthesizing findings. Her take is that none of it replaces the researcher, just frees up their time. Watch her discussion with Olivier Toubia and @orioljbosch.

Dialectic 60: Patrick Hsu! @pdhsu & @arcinstitute are combining biology, engineering, and AI to turn a sci-fi future into reality. Patrick got expelled from college at 13, returned at 15, later worked on early CRISPR breakthroughs, and teamed up with @SKonermann & @patrickc to found Arc. A new study funded by Baszucki Group is bringing an innovative mental health model to resource-poor rural areas. Led by Dr. Will Rutland, researchers at @UABHeersink are launching a new study in partnership with a local food bank and @HatchforHunger to deliver ketogenic food boxes to participants with bipolar disorder. This community-based approach allows ketogenic therapy to be introduced alongside existing treatment modalities, with the goal of expanding care options in rural areas that experience severe shortages in psychiatric care. “This study reflects something we deeply believe: that the communities with the greatest need should have access to the most promising treatments,” said Julie Milder, PhD, Director of Neuroscience at Baszucki Group. “Dr. Rutland and his team are proposing a model that takes equity seriously — using existing community infrastructure to conduct rigorous research within a population that is historically underrepresented in clinical research.” Read more about how Dr. Rutland and his team are pioneering equity in clinical research: bit.ly/4jWLSaf

This week, members of the Baszucki Group team attended The Ketogenic Foundation’s inaugural conference, which highlighted emerging research and clinical applications in metabolic health and nutritional ketosis. The program brought together leading scientists and clinicians exploring ketogenic therapies across a range of complex chronic conditions, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Metabolic psychiatry was prominently featured, with @GeorgiaEdeMD sharing clinical insights, followed by @GuidoFrank, Mary Phillips, MD, and @ZSarnyai sharing research across anorexia nervosa, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. This led into an engaged panel discussion moderated by Baszucki Group’s Julie Milder, PhD. The event showcased extraordinary cross-disciplinary collaboration and scientific momentum. We commend The Ketogenic Foundation and @BrittanieVolk for convening such an impactful conference, and we remain dedicated to advancing research and practice at the intersection of mental health and metabolism.
