Thinking of María Corina Machado as she returns to Venezuela, and wishing her safety and strength. Her courage and steadfast leadership in the effort to restore democracy reflect the aspirations of millions of Venezuelans.
At @NEDemocracy, we stand with Venezuelans working peacefully to restore democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental freedoms—a future in which there are no political prisoners and all can speak freely, participate without fear, and choose their leaders through free and fair elections.

It was wonderful to meet @MariaCorinaYA earlier this year. Today, as she returns to #Venezuela, I'm wishing her safety and strength. Her courage is extraordinary. The Venezuelan people deserve to have their democratic mandate respected and their future decided freely.

785,000 Georgians voted for groups now facing a ban.
The issue is bigger than any party or politician. Democracy depends on citizens having a genuine choice—& the ability to change their government peacefully.
Political competition is a democratic right, not a privilege granted by those in power.

In the week leading up to the International Day of Political Prisoners, HRF highlights the experience of those who are arbitrarily detained around the world — in their own words.
In a letter addressed to the United Nations, detained Karakalpak lawyer and journalist Dauletmurat Tazhimuratov writes, “In the 21st century, I am being held in a cell without a proper floor. It has been 60 days since I last had access to a bathhouse; I wash myself in the toilet.”
HRF calls for Uzbekistan to release Dauletmurat Tazhimuratov, echoing his plea: “I beg you to help me and protect a man who, having already been knocked down, is still being beaten.”

Effect.uz, Tashkent 🇺🇿: Checking in on one of Uzbekistan’s most controversial, tenacious, and daring media platforms, which continues to grow. All under 35, the team represents the generation that makes up the core of Uzbekistan’s population. They are committed to providing in-depth coverage of public grievances, confronting the technical, professional, political, and financial challenges that come with this kind of journalism. Effect.uz calls itself a news agency and aspires to grow into one, while its current priority is to focus on the country’s economic and social problems.
As always, my conversations with the team covered the essentials: building trust, sharpening journalistic skills, navigating daily ethical dilemmas, and adopting best practices in reporting.

Many of these Ukrainian guys who returned home from Russian captivity in today's latest prisoner exchange had been held in enemy dungeons since 2022. Marines who defended Mariupol back then... it feels like an entire era of the world ago.
Among them are five guys who had previously been believed killed in the mass murder of Ukrainian POWs at the Russian concentration camp in Olenivka.
I am so incredibly proud of our people. The greatest and most heroic nation in the world today.

"It's truly shocking that that somebody as inhuman and inhumane as Putin would be called a humanitarian.
Stephen Hubbard was tortured. He was imprisoned for years. He was kept away from his family. His family had no idea where he was, and in the beginning, if he was alive or dead. That's not a humanitarian.
Over the past few hours, multiple ballistic missiles have exploded in Kyiv, where millions of people live, and thousands of people are without power and getting ready for a very difficult winter. That is not what a humanitarian does."
Thank you, @CaitrionaPerry and @BBCWorld, for having our Senior Advisor Mykola Murskyj on to discuss the latest developments in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
