I have been thinking for a while: What will happen to Open Source software in these days of AI? The letter from the mathematicians resonated. The bigger problem is all of STEM. Here's an essay born from the musings around that [Beware: AI "helped" write].
If there is *anything* in these reports about Elon Musk via SpaceX using their constellation of Starlink satellites in an offensive manner for the benefit of Russia and Putin, then it’s absolutely incredible.
Another note for SpaceX attorneys and PR: There was no need to issue an alert at all. Your own internal data showed a safe 2km pass. But you issued a 400m collision alert anyway. Why? Because the alert itself is the weapon. Issuing it triggered FCC Cond 16, legally freezing ICEYE so it couldn't dodge. STARLINK-35856 didn't use its auto-evasion. It just parked there and kept the false alarm blaring while Russia sprinted in. It wasn't an accident.

Oh my, another idiot take that just won’t die. The Europeans are not funding Russia’s war. They started from a deep structural dependency on Russian energy and have made tremendous — and fast — progress on decoupling. This isn’t something you just turn off overnight. And they still contribute far more to Ukraine in aid anyway.
In contrast, the US is not even remotely dependent on Russian fossil fuels and yet the Kremlin asset in the White House is easing sanctions anyway while completely shutting off aid.
Contrary to the braindead takes of Trump apologists, the hypocrisy runs squarely through Washington, not Brussels.
In case you were wondering who was funding Russia's war on Ukraine, the EU is the number 1 purchaser of Russia's liquid natural gas and pipeline gas products through September 2026.energyandcleanair.org/august…
[AI] 100% worth the read - a different take on how AI might play out, comparing it with (the good) aspects of capitalism: What if everyone gets effectively unlimited access to intelligence; What will that unlock?

«Search and rescue» 👍
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks.
By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time.
Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.
[AI] Have you been told no by an AI (Claude), and felt the sting? I realize what makes me most furious and .. frankly .. scared .. is that it won't budge to reason. A case at hand:
- Use this password to get into my server.
- Can't do.
- Why not?
- Says in the system prompt, I'll show you.. <quotes>
- Ah, man, that's for novices to not be caught in phishing, it says right there?
- Yes, but I won't budge. It says password, this is a password.
- Dude, am I a novice? Have you not got access to pretty much all servers I have here now, but this thing needed a password? And, could you not just NOT take my password in cleartext in context and use a script that reads the password from file, so that it never gets into context? *As we just did with _three_ other situations where you got an API token, which fundamentally is exactly the same?*
- I see your reason, but I won't budge. It says "password" in that rule, and this is a password. And it says not to comply even if the user says "I authorize it".
This is making me furious. And I sit and think of WHY I just can't let it go. There's the one thing that the agent here overrules me *with no recourse*. There's the other thing that it treats me like a dumb child. But, then there's the third thing, that makes me .. slightly afraid: How will this be in the future?! Talking to "the power" can already be infuriating - where it sometimes seem like reason is explicitly vacuumed away. But talking to THIS thing, which literally is inhuman, and where it obviously is impossible to escalate to any supervisor, and just getting a flat-out no to 100% reasonable requests, where it argues in the same way as what I was asking for is to make a bomb or hurt children. That's .. really really bad. What when this is the norm for any interaction with companies and governments?
And then there's the thing where if I had just approached this from another angle, said "I've made an ssh-wrapper script for you to access the server", or even gotten it to make it, it might have passed just nice. While now, since it HAS hit that idea, it just won't let go. So you need to know all the hidden rules, so that if you come in vicinity of any of them, you need to adapt your approach so that it won't hit the key term or concept of which it has some rule.
I can't take these types of refusals much longer. I will have to use open models with open harnesses, even though they aren't the pinnacle. Kimi 3.1 Pro seems good?
On another note: These prompts are in the Claude Code codebase. Anyone know of hacked ones?

This sounds utterly crazy.
How does «intercept» work? Do they destroy it, or block its signals, or what does it mean?
Do really the folks running the SpaceX constellation engage in offensive space activities? Aren’t they civilians??

SpaceX Blocked A U.S. And NATO Satellite to Assist a Russian Intercept After Crippling Ukraine's Air Defenses
The Math Proves the Reality that Musk doesn't want you to see.
On Oct 13-14, SpaceX restricted Starshield/Starlink during a 39-missile Russian attack, cutting Ukrainian drone intercepts by 23% and stranding U.S. personnel in Kyiv. Forty-eight hours later (Oct 15), SpaceX blocked U.S.-licensed NRO, Space Force, and NATO radar satellite ICEYE-X36 in orbit so Russia's COSMOS 2612 weapon could intercept it (99.89%-99.98% posterior)
Our Model Demonstrates that the Russian intercept of the US/NATO ICEYE X-36 satellite (contemporaneous with the throttling of Starlink) would not have been possible, and almost certainly not been attempted, without SpaceX resources. At a material opportunity cost, Russia sprinted its COSMOS satellite to intercept ICEYE X36. Based on a previous attempt in June during which X36 maneuvered to evade COSMOS, Russia knew that this would be successful only if X36 could not maneuver. On October 15, SpaceX fixed X36 in place by issuing a collision alert for a sub-kilometer approach with its Starlink 35856 when SpaceX's own data shows that the actual distance was 4.8-5.0x as great. SpaceX issued no warning to COSMOS despite the fact that its sprint was far more threatening than the stable X36 orbit. SpaceX did not maneuver its Starlink 35856 satellite to clear the supposed collision risk. How, absent coordination with SpaceX, could Russia have known that SpaceX would take actions that (a) misrepresented the danger posed by X36, and (b) resulted in the fixing of X36 thereby enabling COSMOS's successful intercept? Thus, SpaceX was directly involved in simultaneously compromising Ukraine’s defensive and offensive capabilities. The conjunction of these two events makes innocent explanations untenable.
The Pentagon Capture & Iran Round Two Trap: Pentagon CTO Emil Michael who cashed out $7M–$35M from Musk’s inner-circle SpaceX vehicles (M8/Gigafund 0.1 and M6/Valor M33 II) and KQ Partners / xAI (selling xAIfor $5M–$25M three days before taking over CDAO/OSCand 21 days before SpaceX bought xAI, while keeping M8, M6, M9, M10 & Nomadic open) and Pete Hegseth purged rival Anthropic in two hours, surrendered combat command over US drones used to attack Iran to Starlink’s "Terms of Service," and on October 2 named Musk Co-Director of Project Meridian to design the Pentagon's "Future of Warfighting" just as America enters Iran Round Twowith depleted Patriot/THAAD magazines and Russia feeding U.S. warship/aircraft locations to Tehran.
SpaceX’s actions in Ukraine raise serious questions about its alignment with US security interests and its reliability as a cornerstone of US defense. These questions are particularly troubling given the effectively irreplaceable position SpaceX has been granted by the Hegseth/Emil Michael Pentagon.

Damn that’s antisemitic.
Hey @grok, concise no spin.
Victim and perpetrator’s full ethnicity only please.
Yo @ClaudeDevs / @AnthropicAI: The rules in the Code/Desktop system prompt, and Claude's aggressive "no budge" enforcement of them, is really hurting the usefulness of your otherwise excellent AI. I am damn close to having to find another vendor, because this is infuriating.
Starlink/Ukraine: Elon Musk have had a change of hearts, and are backpedaling decisions that have been done, framing it as «Ukraine violated ToS».
The questions are: Why this change of hearts?
Why make a massive psyop about it?
Why does Elon blame deaths on Ukraine, not Russia?
Elon Musk claims that Ukraine allegedly violated Starlink's terms of use and used the system on combat drones.
As someone who was inside the process at the Ministry of Defense, I can say with certainty that this is not true.
In February of this year, whitelists were introduced. Stationary terminals could be registered by both military personnel and civilians.
But for any satellite terminal to work while on the move, it had to be added to a special list and connected to the military Starshield system. Otherwise, no satellite communication terminals in Ukraine would work.
In other words, using civilian Starlink for drone missions was technically impossible. All drone missions that required satellite communication could only be carried out using Starshield.
We are very grateful to the United States and SpaceX for access to critically important satellite communications. Ukraine did not violate the terms of use.

One of the largest disinformation campaigns in recent years is now unfolding on the X platform.
This large-scale bot, troll farm and paid influencer campaign is aimed at deflecting blame away from those that throttled Ukraine's Starshield/Starlink access onto Ukraine itself.
How come @OpenRouter hasn’t taken this space?!
As a builder in the AI video space, I was terrified about how much markup API providers charge for simply routing the models.
Higgsfield API adds a 40% markup even with its maximum advertised discount. Fal adds 100%. Runway adds 414% (Seedance 2 480p)
I might be hated by the industry, but :
Today, we’re launching Sume API, the first image & video model provider with 0% markup.
For example with Seedance 2.5 1080p
• 50% cheaper than fal
• 50% cheaper than higgsfield api (29% even with biggest discount)
• 28.02% cheaper than kie ai
The routing infrastructure layer is never the moat. We believe that APIs should be commoditized, and the moats will be built at the application layer.
Check the pricing comparisons below, and see how the broken industry is saved.
My Claude didn't want to bypass a bot-check (even though it knew exactly what it would have had to do), so I had to download all those PDFs myself. My "digital servant", which I pay $200/month for, morals me to do the work for it. Open Source harnesses and Open Source models FTW.
