ALT BREAKING: Two people arrested by University of Michigan police at a protest against military recruitment on campus are now facing extreme charges including bogus accusations of assault, battery, and malicious destruction of property. They will appear in Ann Arbor court on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 and are calling on everyone to PACK THE COURT in solidarity. At the career fair protest on February 9, 2023, protesters distributed flyers calling on the university to stop supporting army, police, Camp Grayling, and Cop City, and two people were arrested after red-tinted water was spilled on US Army, Navy, and NSA recruitment materials. The arrestees were booked by DPSS (campus police) and released after several hours with trespass orders. However, earlier in May they were informed that prosecutors had slapped these additional draconian charges. ALT This follows @UMich police attacking and detaining striking @GEO3550 graduate protesters in April and signals a gross escalation of University measures against protected First Amendment protest activity. "It is terrifying that people are facing such serious threats for exercising their first amendment rights," said abolitionist Ann Arbor organizer Wendy Duluth. "It's really important people show up to court dates and let the nominally-progressive Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit know we are watching him try to chill protest and that he won’t get away with it." The University of Michigan is heavily invested in military and defense industries - the biggest polluters on Earth - and regularly invites their representatives to recruit on campus.
