Finally getting around to finishing up, and posting, my essay on Bloodborne, time, and higher-dimensional horror. Part 0 — Preface vaecordia.substack.com/p/the…

You can just do gravitational wave research in your own time. Don’t wait for data release, just build your own 3km detector and post new events on Substack. And who needs telescopes? You have binoculars. It’s so easy. You don’t need a PhD. It’s just posturing.
Also, anything you do in a PhD, you can do in your own time. With platforms like substack, research, reading, reflection, and reaching out to audiences have become democratised and widely available. The PhD is about credentialism, membership of a club deemed prestigious, baubles.

There is a great deal wrong with academia and much of its ivory towering endures still, but the answer is not and will not ever be so stupid as “just post it on Substack”.

Is there a discussion to be had on the democratisation of source material and data? Yes. It is already being had. But even if everything was public, you are not going to produce the Perfect Argument without input from others. And the way that becomes systematic is academia.

it’s hard not to feel the universe isn’t a little haunted when all we do is search for the light and song of dead things to understand it. to hear the universe we must feel it ring the fabric of time and space. it can be seen at night alone, in the quiet hours. cosmic ghosts.

spectral sirens, dark sirens, vampire stars and stellar graveyards, heat death. the haunted house around us is scary and it’s also home; we are basically watching the walls of the room to try to know it, and we haven’t even gotten off the rug near the fireplace

astrophysics has truly lost the plot we are putting tiny black holes inside neutron stars, making dark matter that acts like dark energy, and trying to find exoplanets 10 billion light years away

it is fundamentally a demonstration that however much we have come to know of the universe and how much more there is most people don’t even know we know there is simply always going to be more that we may never know at all. cosmic awe, cosmic horror, these are the same thing.
