Bats surf storm fronts!!! Technically we're on the cover! (Top right) Thrilled to get this paper out in Science Magazine! Using novel ICARUS tags we track spring bat migration across central Europe. @MPI_animalbehav @dechmannlab
Pollination in walnuts and pecans occurs through a genetically controlled temporal flowering dimorphism. Two distinct morphs alternate their phases of male and female flowering across the season, promoting outcrossing that has maintained a stable equilibrium throughout tens of millions of years of evolution. 🔊 A few months ago, @urban_ecologist et al. quantified the online, ornamental trade in #Kerivoula #picta. 👀🔎 doi.org/10.1007/s10344-024-0… 🆕 Now, @BronwenHunter et al. used an automated pipeline to monitor trade in 🦇 on e-commerce platforms. 👀🔎doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.202…
Trade in bats must stop! Our new paper, led by @BronwenHunter highlights scale of online trade. Most buyers from Europe and N America; most bats from Global South. Some platforms are tightening rules, but still easy to find @AmazonUK. @_BCT_ @BatConIntl url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com…

This is wonderful perspective from Olivier -- always keep a growth mindset to your work. Accept when you are wrong (as we all are) and learn from it. Thanks for being a leader Olivier!
I've now shared the experience in a short article 😇 Had to fail to make it to Nature 🤣 My paper was proved wrong. After a sleepless night, here's what I did next nature.com/articles/d41586-0… Thank you so much to Jack Leeming Senior careers editor @Nature for his tremendous help 😉

Many ecologists are excited about new tech - eg AI, ecoacoustics, automated monitoring... And some imply that this tech will help reverse biodiversity loss Without decisive socio-political action on the nature emergency, all this tech will do is document further loss & collapse

Protecting bats saves human lives. Amazing new working linking declines due to WNS to increased insecticide use and increased infant mortality.
“Fungal disease killed bats, bats stopped eating enough insects, farmers applied more pesticide to maximize profit and keep food plentiful and cheap, the extra pesticide use led to more babies dying. It is a sobering result.” nytimes.com/2024/09/05/clima…
