Everyone made it sound like I’d finally get to keep more of my paycheck. Then came the homeowners insurance renewal. Then the property taxes. Then the HOA fees. Then car insurance, groceries, utilities, rent, and every other expense that somehow costs more than expected. You save money on state income taxes, but one insurance renewal can wipe out a huge chunk of those savings. And if you own a house, the property taxes and HOA fees never stop coming.
