Can an LM, starting from random init (!!), learn to generate all of its pretraining data?
Introducing Self-Play Pretraining with Zero Data. Two models start from random initialization: a generator proposes programs for a universal Turing machine and a learner trains on their outputs. We never train on any real data, but see predictable scaling on natural datasets: zero-shot val loss on images, text, audio, and melodies decreases predictably with self-play compute. And the learner develops in-context learning capabilities.

The Glauberg Prince
Late Iron Age, Hesse, Germany | c. 2,450 ybp
By Ancient Europeans on IG
The Glauberg Prince was one of the most remarkable elite burials of Iron Age Europe.
Discovered near Glauberg in Hesse, Germany, the grave dates to the 5th century BCE and belonged to a high-status warrior of the Celtic world.
The man was buried with an exceptional collection of weapons and ornaments, including a sword, shield, spear, and elaborate jewellery.
Most striking was a distinctive leaf-shaped headdress, represented in the famous sandstone statue found near the burial mound.
The statue, believed to depict the buried warrior or a closely connected elite figure, stands over 1.8 metres tall and shows a warrior wearing the same unusual headdress, along with a neck ring and other symbols of status.
The burial formed part of a much larger ceremonial landscape, including a monumental mound, processional avenues, and additional graves.
These features suggest that the Glauberg was not simply a burial site, but an important centre of power, ritual and elite identity.
The Glauberg Prince offers a rare glimpse into the world of Celtic aristocracy during the Late Hallstatt period, revealing the wealth, military status and ceremonial authority of Iron Age Europe’s ruling elite.

Basically East Asia was just a hellhole before America pulled up and nobody has any right to call out any other on anything that happened before then
