Being accurate to the source material would mean in this case making it another sci-fi action adventure hero franchise. We already have that, and its already been done in this genre. They are going for distinctness here, risk, and more importantly, effective storytelling.

Making it earth-based is literally risk-adverse storytelling. It’s an attempt to coddle the audience with comfortability and familiarity in the hope of not alienating the “adults” wouldn’t take it seriously if it were in space. It’s literally the SAFE version of the story.
