Nepal: The Rise of Populist Politics, Future, Hope
This is not intended to make us lose hope or optimism, but to make us cautious and vigilant, so that our hope is not crushed again.

How does an upper-level trough interact with a low-pressure system to produce precipitation (possibly heavy in a few places) over Nepal? Here’s an explanation with a schematic. 👇

Did I miss something? A couple of months on from the Bhotekoshi flood (followed by other natural disasters) I haven’t seen Nepal’s government communicating to citizens about its short and long-term plans for affected individuals and communities. Surely these are in place, though?

8) the cabinet ministers seem to think/work either as technocrats and firm believers of neoliberal economic policies, OR as authoritarian populists who believe in rule by executive; Citizens are seen as consumers/subjects & there is lack of political accountability

As I wrap up my quick visit to Nepal during Dashain, I was able to make the following observations: 1) the new govt led by Balen Shah remains popular; this govt's biggest strength and legitimacy from people's perspective seems to rest on the idea of integrity...
Summary:
Sycophant citizens.
Defunct Parliament
Wanna be dictator PM.
No social safety-net policies,
Ultra neo-liberal economy.
~~~ Failed state?
Who is going to tell @NepaliCongress and @thapagk that giving space to Nepal’s richest person in the party’s key leadership position is not right, that too as a representative from ‘inclusive cluster’. This is not new Congress; this is not reformed Congress.
समाजमा कसैको शव उठाउन र अन्तिम संस्कारमा सहभागी हुन पनि 'जात' को लेखाजोखा हुन्छ। जुन समाजमा मान्छेको पीडा, शोक र अन्तिम बिदाइमा समेत जात, धर्म र वर्गको तराजु प्रयोग गरिन्छ, त्यहाँ सामाजिक चेतना मरेको घोषणा गर्दा कुनै फरक पर्दैन।।
नेपालमा रुल अफ ल को वर्तमान अवस्था:
१. राजनीतिक दलका नेता, सांसद्, मन्त्री वा कार्यकर्तासँग जोडिएका सम्भावित अपराध वा हिंसाको छानबिन राजनीतिक दलले आफैँ गर्ने;
२. प्रहरीलाई रितपूर्वक हुलाक टिकट टाँसेर निवेदन नदिएसम्म हिंसा वा अपराधका घटनाको अनुसन्धान वा छानविन नहुने; र
३. विद्यमान कानुनअनुसार सत्ताधारी दलका नेता, सांसद् वा मन्त्रीले अपराध गरेको अकाट्य प्रमाण भेटिएमा कानुनको कमजोरी भएको ठहरिने र कानुन परिमार्जन गरिने ।
It has been deeply overwhelming to receive so many messages of love, healing, and hope over the last few days. Reading the stories of fellow Brain Tumor and Cancer survivors, as well as those currently in the thick of their own battles, has brought me a sense of belonging I didn’t know I needed. From a single post, I found my community. I am so grateful I gathered the courage to share my story publicly. ✨✨
Back in 2022, I was diagnosed with 2nd stage Optic Nerve Glioma (a form of brain tumor) at B&C Hospital. When we consulted top hospitals in Kathmandu , the majority labeled it a "malignant cancer" and advised against treatment, giving us little to no hope of survival. But my family and I refused to give up. The tumor was 19mm on my optic nerve.
We traveled to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, India, where we learned the tumor was benign, yet inoperable due to high life-threatening risks and the certainty of permanent blindness. The recommended path was radiation therapy. I went through 40 fractions of radiation, an extraordinarily heavy toll on the body. There were days I felt like giving up, constantly haunted by the question, "Why me?" My life was turned completely upside down.
Beyond the physical toll, the financial burden was staggering. My parents poured their lifelong savings into my care, and our family had to arrange millions in a matter of weeks. Watching the emotional heartbreak and stress my parents endured broke me. In the middle of all that darkness, I realized I had no choice except to be stubbornly, unapologetically brave.
Today, I am gradually recovering, and by God's grace, my tumor has shrunk from 19mm down to 13mm. My desire to live & thrive is far greater than any tumor could ever be. Looking back, in a strange way, I am almost thankful for this journey. It taught me what it truly means to be alive. It taught me resilience. It taught me to treat everyone with unconditional love and kindness, because you never know what hidden battles someone is fighting, or when their time with us might come to an end.
But it also opened my eyes to a harsh reality. That is OUR HEALTH CARE system is deeply broken, unequal & inaccessible.
I recognize the relative privilege I had. My parents were both working professionals, and we had some property to draw from. But what about those who don't? If someone from a low-income family faces this exact disease, they are often left with no option at all than to die. Furthermore, the lifelong post-radiation maintenance and health care costs remain painfully high for anyone to sustain alone.
At the same time, it revealed how deeply our society misunderstands illness, often treating a medical condition as a sign of permanent inability. I remember relatives, neighbors & friends grieving not over my health or recovery, but over whether I would ever marry or what would become of my life. The noise of societal judgment is often heavier than the illness itself.
As i look toward the future, I sincerely hope our leadership prioritize accessible physical and mental healthcare for every citizen. No family should ever have to choose between financial ruin and the life of their loved one. A state cannot thrive when its people are left to die under the weight of illness and medical debt. We must fight for a Nepal where healthcare is a fundamental right, not a death sentence.
To everyone who reached out: thank you for reminding me that none of us are walking this path alone. Standing in power with all the cancer warriors. I love you all 🤍✨❤️🙏
AOC: What the elite want—and they’re already planning for it—is to hoard all of the resources for themselves as the world gets more and more physically unstable.
And in an environment of AI, they want to wipe out all of our livelihoods. They want to make sure none of us have jobs, and they want to keep all the spoils of those riches while consuming and burning energy at a pace that is completely unsustainable.
सर्वोच्चले यो विज्ञप्ति निकालेछ, जहाँ पुर्व प्रधानन्यायाधीशलाई मध्यरातमा कानुनि प्रक्रिया नपुर्याइकन समातेकोमा विरोध गरिएको छ। न्यायालयको सर्वोच्च निकाए सर्वोच्च अदालतले यस्तो प्रक्रिया दिएको मैले अहिले सम्म याद गरेको छैन, हुने त आफुलाई नै पर्दा हो सबैले यस्तो बोल्ने, लेख्ने।
तर गैर न्यायिक हिरासत त नेपाल प्रहरीले धेरै गर्छ नि हैन र? यसमा कति चोटी अदालतले कारवाहीको सिफारिस गरेको छ? कति चोटी प्रहरी प्रशाशनलाई कारवाहीको सिफारिस गरेको छ?
अहिले आफुलाई राज्य भन्ने हरु, हिजो आफुलाई राज्य भन्ने हरु आखिर सबैले यहि आतंकको सिकार भएकै छन् वा हुनु पर्ने नै छ। आफु सरकारमा हुदा राज्य नै सर्व हो भन्ने अनि आफु शक्तिमा नरहदा जनताको लागि कुरा गरेको जस्तो गर्ने?
मेरो कुरा स्पष्ट छ, चाहे V-10 होस् या प्रनेश , वा चोलेन्द्र कि बालेन्द्र, सबैको अधिकार बराबर हो।
कोहिलाई पनि कानुनी प्रक्रिया पुरा नगरी हिरासतमा राख्नु हुदैन र यदि राखेमा राज्यले क्षतिपूर्ति दिनु पर्छ। अनुसन्धानको नाममा १०औ दिन हिरासतमा राख्ने र तर्साएर छोड्ने चलनले केहि दिन रमाइलो त देखिन्छ तर समाज police state तिर गएको पत्तो नहोला।
