i mean the real trouble is this is no consolation. our students get good degrees from a respected institution, but that's not the same as harvard's imprimatur, which can be earned apparently by doing very little at all
looking forward to telling my students who are handling a 4-books-plus-articles/week reading load how superior they are to their peers at harvard

just not possible to compete with an institution where the bit that matters is getting in

finally mimbres gets some competition
Want to start a reading series where the point is that is not chic, nor edgy, nor sexy, it is a reading series for weird losers by weird losers

turns out spending four consecutive hours teaching how racialist theories work claim by claim, move by rhetorical move, is fucking soul crushing

why do people assume the inclusion of a text on a syllabus is necessarily laudatory

was reading bodin with my undergrads, and he starts talking about galen, using him as a piece of his evidentiary armor. but the galen he's talking about is an artefact of a thousand years of telephone

and when they spouted hot nonsense, it wasn't with a kind of rigorous attachment to a coherent nonsense theory that preceded them. there was a vibe of a theory that they vibed their own version of

the difference between galen and bodin's invokation was obvious to my students, who had read galen a week before. but surely bodin had 'mastered' his classics

maybe its just the early scholars i've read, but 'mastery' is not a concept that i would apply to them. even the foundational big shots spouted hot nonsense all the time
how did earlier scholars master mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and religious law, while most scholars today struggle with basic academic literacy? when did scholarship become so intellectually impoverished.

that's a way of developing authority, sure, but it isn't the same as a rigorously literate understanding of what has come before you
