gotten much more block happy recently. if I’ve blocked you, it’s pretty much just saying “i categorically do not want to see this person on my timeline”. it is not necessarily personal, i pull the trigger pretty readily, but it’s almost always because i see open cruelty. so.

if you have material interests, you shouldn't get to vote because you'd be a single-issue voter on maintaining and increasing your material interests, plus voting for any party that promises to do this. only the ghost council of orzhova is fit to rule
If you receive welfare, you shouldn’t get to vote because you'd be a single-issue voter on maintaining and increasing your welfare, plus voting for any party that promises to do this.

Hmm—I think there’s a really important level on which this is a fake tradeoff. Accuracy is valuable for signaling true info. But if you botch the tone on a sensitive statement, you create Animosity, which just uncomplicatedly kills all signal to a person going forward.
I don't enjoy tone policing around hard but true statements. Sorry if I do it. I would like to be more polite, savvy etc, but ultimately I think this world has more deficit in accuracy than politeness.

Additionally, there appears to be a supremely common failure mode where people slide from being indifferent to negative reception into actively optimizing for it in ways that hurt accuracy—my position would hold even if this wasn’t the case, but it’s also worth considering.

Because I do not want to be fixed for ever in a universe of pure hatred.
Why do liberals want a healthy strong Republican party?

I’m unsure what it would feel like for people to say “I deeply dislike you personally, but I want to set that aside to collaborate on [thing we have shared interest in].” I know it’s a true description of my feelings for some people, but the usual method is “ignore the former.”

I think I should try honesty in it, as a mental exercise.

Retrospect, omens, portents, etc.
Pete Hegseth demanded his team to bring Eisenhower's globe in his office, despite warnings that only historians should move the iconic globe. His staff dropped it and broke it.

If you’re interested anyways, I’d put it as “In hubristic, shortsighted, populist yearning to take the greatness of centuries past for ourselves without the full understanding of whence came that greatness and the proper way to uphold it, we will destroy the world.”

Better to be long-winded than a vagueposter, I think, especially for the sake of those less inclined to such thinking. Though I will reiterate that the specific details of the parallel are interchangeable.

It seems to me that very few people actually believe that their elected leaders represent them. I find this baffling. We have them for this purpose. My leader is a pointer to me, a symbol of me. They are public servants—if a servant misbehaves, it is their master’s shame.

I am personally marked by every action taken by those in governmental office, even and especially those I disagree with. I say this to explain why I believe conduct and character are so vital, even beyond their policy correlates.

Hot take: modern life is wonderful, this is actually the best time ever to have been alive, and the social and political problems that people complain about cause people to lose that perspective.

he rarely posts but he’s got a really excellent rate of good takes. Very few other politicians, even former ones, about whom I can say that latter.
Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

cogent of AI risk—and mostly the right sorts of AI risk, too! xitter.cf/mittromney/status/2062…
Our highest and most urgent national priority should be AI safeguards. The risks of AI weapons, pathogens, mass unemployment, surveillance, and even extinction must not continue to be largely ignored.

many know this quote. Few know that Lewis continues (paraphrased): "we should allot plenty of time to kinky power dynamics in the bedroom, so that when the Nazis arrive offering us the thrill of coercion and power, we can just say 'already got you beat there' and laugh them off"
