This is where the King should have put his foot down and refused to allow his guards to be used as a political prop. The existence of an office above the PM and his requirement to be appointed by the King is precisely to avoid him having the pretensions of a head of state.

Today is the last day, for now, of the Chancery Division of the High Court. Lanyardists are renaming it to the Business and Property Division tomorrow.

This continues to be the most absurd story. Suppose counsel representing a rape defendant breached the judge’s direction not to refer to the complainant’s sexual history? The Garden Court persuasion would be the first to be howling “contempt!” The only question is whether Menon did what’s alleged or not.

Perhaps the most disturbing element in the fantasy world of (ex)-Professor Jason Arday is not his proclivity to embellish his achievements (or lack thereof) in absurd ways that were easily exposed or Cambridge University’s facile complicity in his whole scam but that a reporter at Times Higher Education, who was looking into anomalies in Mr Arday’s dodgy CV, was subjected to a four-month police investigation for allegedly harassing him. The police need to be held to account for this abuse of police power to thwart a journalist from doing his job.

For a Prince - and also a sitting Labour Baroness - to accuse a High Court judge of a “whitewash” is disgraceful. If they think the judge got it wrong, they can appeal. But branding a reasoned judgment a “whitewash” is not criticism. It is a brazen attack on the rule of law.
Prince Harry has attacked the judge who dismissed his £50m privacy case against the publisher of the Daily Mail and accused him of a “whitewash”. "The lengths to which the court has gone to exonerate the Mail is as shocking as it is totally unwarranted.” Follow the latest ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/07…

The problem with this patronising approach to the "diverse" whom she feels require her benevolent interventions in order to succeed is that everyone will know that male, white judges have to be really good but that black/brown/female ones may so-so. Very bad. Merit only, please.
Lammy's proposed appointee to head JAC is Prof Lynne Berry. She said: "I don't believe that merit alone is the only consideration that the law allows (for appointing judges). Merit is crucial but so is a focus on diversity". Why? Pick the best & let the chips fall where they may.

The relentless march of lanyardism, gradually leaching all interest and historical colour from our legal system. There's absolutely no reason whatsoever why the Chancery Division's name could not remain the same whilst it gains some additional functions.
There needs to be the campaign of all campaigns to stop this happening. For one, you could get exactly the same thing and keep the historic name! (also, as I keep having to remind everyone, Chancery is the senior division!)

Something which I think compounds the horror of the Henry Nowak footage is watching the wriggling attempts to ‘sensibilise’ the inhumanity of his final moments by saying it all actually conformed to proper procedure.

It goes under remarked how the “titans” of post war politics, with their double firsts and hinterlands and thick glasses and unbelievable bravery during the war, gave us an extended period of absolute and relative British decline
Denis Healey, one of six formidable candidates in Labour's 1976 leadership election, was a grammar school boy from Yorkshire who achieved a double first in classics at Oxford, served in the second world war (including as beachmaster at the Battle of Anzio), was mentioned in dispatches, demobbed as a major, spoke several foreign languages, and was a gifted amateur painter and pianist and all-round aficionado of the arts. It’s unfortunate that this statement from the Bar Council mentions a barrister’s duty to represent a client fearlessly but not a barrister’s duty to uphold the rule of law. The judge in this case had expressly directed that counsel were not to tell the jury that they were free to disregard his directions of law. The barrister allegedly - and at this stage this is just an allegation - did exactly what the judge had ruled that he must not do. All the Court of Appeal has done is to hold that the procedure the judge adopted to deal with this possible contempt was wrong. It has returned the matter to the judge for him to take forward under the correct procedure, if he sees fit. It is hardly appropriate for the Bar Council to be pronouncing at this stage that the matter should be at an end.
Bar Council Chair statement on contempt of court case Barrister Rajiv Menon KC has won an appeal on an important point of lack of jurisdiction. In a ruling on Tuesday, the Court of Appeal stopped Mr Menon's forthcoming case, saying there was no jurisdiction for the High Court to hear the case. But the senior judges left the option for the challenge to be resumed under correct procedural powers. Chair of the Bar Kirsty Brimelow KC said: “I have followed with concern this exceptional attempt to refer Rajiv Menon KC for contempt of court. A barrister has a duty to represent their clients fearlessly and judge-instigated contempt proceedings risk a chilling effect on the profession. The Court of Appeal judgment is welcomed, and it is hoped that this now is an end of this troubling episode."

You teach books because of the quality of what the authors wrote, not because of who or what (you think) they were. Our educational system seems to be massively overpopulated by people who have no idea of what education is ‘for’.

This is not normal: it is a sign of a massive collapse in civilisational standards, policing, and common decency. Why has what was a hundred years ago such a fundamentally lawful society become so barbaric?

I’ve written to every Member of Parliament today. Proposals before Parliament would remove jury trials from offences carrying up to three years in prison. Freedoms rarely vanish overnight. They are chipped away in the name of efficiency. Juries did not cause the crisis in our courts. Removing them will not fix it. When the state seeks to take someone’s liberty for serious offences, the judgment of ordinary citizens should never be optional. This is close to becoming law. Please read the letter.
