Another winter shelter, more pods & temporary solutions. Tonight, #Fredericton Council considers both. But where is the evidence this is working and getting people into treatment & recovery? Compassion without accountability is not a strategy. thomjeffwrites.substack.com/… #nbpoli

Do things that would make your eight-year-old self happy and your eighty-year-old self proud. Change requires letting a former version of yourself die. Therefore, maturity is a series of small funerals for the people you used to be. markmanson.net/breakthrough/…

I was in Toronto last weekend to shadow TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon and its EOC. Working on operations for the Fredericton Marathon 2027 has been an interesting journey into locations and mobile GPS tracking, building on the planning module I developed for 2026.

Spent the last 2 weeks in Canada, and it's immediately clear why America will keep its competitive advantage forever. Don't get me wrong, I love Canada! It's beautiful out here, and the people themselves are also lovely. But! There is a serious lack of ambition, and an enormous amount of averseness to risk in a way that is not really fixable imo

Last night…saw the event posted for a riding constituency meeting. Hit the ‘going’ button & suggested the councilors for Wards 10 & 9 be invited. This morning….lets change the event. Hum… When will Ward 10 residents have a meeting? There is a lot going on. #nbpoli

They love to send seniors and others with medical problems into a free for all. Then they’ll call your house with no caller ID and, if you don’t answer b/c you don’t know who’s calling you’ll get a letter saying they’re taking you off the list of those who need a doctor.

The government cannot simultaneously claim that they have "brought immigration back under control" while also insisting it wasn't broken prior. Otherwise, why would it need to be brought under control?

Charles should invite members of Holt gov ministerial task force on ‘homelessness’ for lunch to see how their inaction at scale the crisis demands is unfolding downtown #Fredericton These people need help, some involuntary, not enforcement. #nbpoli youtu.be/nLRQ9GTGxhk?si=C9yl…

I thought the NB Health Link was a wait list and it would be the source for attaching patients by some rubric like need and time without access to primary care. But just like the decision where to expand, Holt government has no plan for attaching…except a free for all. #nbpoli

When I was a senior executive in private sector, I knew the key details of my department and company. I expect the NB minister for mental health & addictions to know the wait times for care. He didn’t have an answer on InfoAM this morning. Not even a directional idea. #nbpoli

Security called me at 6:12 AM today. "Patch every PHP server immediately." I asked what happened. "Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required." Cool. How many PHP servers do we have? According to inventory: 12 According to reality: Nobody knows. We found one running WordPress. Three running old internal tools. One under someone's desk. Two inside vendor appliances. A forgotten employee directory from 2016. And a server named: PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH Naturally, that one runs payroll exports. Then we found a PHP 5.6 box. I asked who owned it. The documentation said: BRIAN. Brian left in 2019. We called Brian. He said: "Oh wow, that's still running?" Excellent. By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call. CEO: "Can hackers actually get in?" Security: "Potentially yes." CEO: "Without a password?" Security: "Yes." CEO: "Then why do WE need passwords?" Not the lesson. Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue. Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers. Finance asked for a cost comparison. At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline. Marketing refused. "Our campaign is live." So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover. We finally patched everything we could find. Then our scanner discovered another PHP server. Hostname: TEMP-PHP-2014 Uptime: 4,512 days. Nobody knows what it does. Nobody owns it. Nobody can shut it down. But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels. Security has classified it as critical infrastructure. It is running PHP 5.4. The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees. The emergency patch took four hours. Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven. The internet isn't held together with code. It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.

Foursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. teendrama.substack.com/p/som…

“Delivering Change,” says the Holt government. Felt by whom? Last year: targets for patient attachment and appointments within five days. This year: 22 clinics, with no accounting against those targets in the speech. My latest: thomjeffwrites.substack.com/… #nbpoli
