Hey everyone.
Times are challenging in healthcare right now. We may be carrying more than we normally would.
Things May get worse before they get better.
Please. Let’s be there for each other. Let’s keep being there for each other. Now more than ever.

A short thread related to a tough day.

13 years ago today, I had an unforgettable experience that has stuck with me to this day.
I was sitting and praying quietly in church during service when someone came in the side door of and screamed, “John, please come outside now!“

There are certain people you cared for professionally who you never forget. And regrets, sometimes, for actions that could have been more skillfully taken.
There are certain events that bring all that back.

Remembering one of the greatest influences, closest friends, and smartest minds I’ve ever known.
7 yrs since Jack left us. There isn’t a single shift that goes by where I don’t remember something he taught me.
Missing the adventures. Cherishing the memories. @thosewecarry

As a small, blonde person I don’t really want to get typecast but I have spoken to a few people who have been having flashbacks etc recently and I don’t think we are really taught much about handling trauma and the received wisdom is absent when rotating often/less of a firm

Doesn’t your heart just drop when you come in and see new names on the board in certain rooms? Patients we’ve cared for for weeks… but you know they didn’t improve enough in 2-3 days to go to the floor or LTAC 😔
If you know, you know…

Gregg coming though with another story of #ThoseWeCarry. While not every first responder is diagnosed with PTSD, if you do it long enough, you end up with memories and some demons.

Every 'patient' is a person.

(1) Just recently had a loved one get into a serious car accident and end up in the neuro icu. Usually I’m calm and collected when it comes to seeing people in such critical condition but my stomach turned & my hands began to sweat seeing him for the first time. I’m so familiar-

Never underestimate the power of a single patient to show us where to look, how we can improve, what needs to change.
Very touched to contribute to this collection "That One Patient". Some amazing people in here too! (Anthony Fauci, Marcel Levi...)

“Grief should never feel performative.” A truth, hard recognised.

Our agency comes from choosing audience, timing, and venue. Not everyone deserves to hold our stories. Grief should never feel performative. In the end, it’s the difference between showing our scars versus bleeding onto others.

Maybe because I speak with vulnerability about everything from fetal loss to my own medical trauma to the huge psychological toll of this past year, I am often asked how I choose what to share. The cost of sharing so to speak. A thread 1/
Sometimes, we carry them for good reasons. But it hits us just as hard.

The best exposition I have heard about the pressures facing doctors during the pandemic from @ClareGerada

What a beautiful perspective. Same as Tharusha I’ve never thought of them in that way. It completely changes it from a burden to carry to a privilege. That has completely changed my outlook, thank you
