As teachers, we are often told WHAT to teach but not always HOW to teach it! Effective teaching includes retrieval practice (recalling information), interleaving (mixing different topics rather than teaching topics in “blocks”), scaffolding (providing temporary supports) and so much more! It is essential that teachers learn these #ScienceOfLearning instructional strategies to make both our teaching AND student learning more effective! TOM CRUISE'S "CRAZY" 2005 PHARMA RANT LOOKS PROPHETIC NOW Remember when everyone mocked Tom Cruise for that Matt Lauer interview? Turns out he was right about Big Pharma all along. Tom Cruise (2005 Today Show): "You're glib. You don't even know what Ritalin is... There's ways of doing it so we don't end up in 'A Brave New World.'" Nearly 20 years later, his "unhinged" warnings about overmedication, especially in children, are now mainstream medical concerns. Top healthcare professionals echo his exact points about overprescription and questioning the chemical imbalance theory. Cruise was ridiculed for challenging pharmaceutical industry influence on mental health treatments. Now we have an opioid crisis, skyrocketing ADHD and autism diagnoses, and growing skepticism about psych meds' long-term effects. His delivery was intense, but his core message about caution and education proved dead-on. Sometimes the "crazy" people are just early. Source: Today Show Interview 2005

The Declaration of Child Rights-Centric Education is now launched! You can read and sign it at rights-centric.education/dec…. The essence of it is that if anything in education is inconsistent with human rights, and especially child rights, then we have to prioritise human rights.

What happens when you see children's distressed behaviour as a sign that they need to be punished? Suspensions. Isolation. Detentions. More than ever before. And none of it makes any difference and in fact has the potential to make things worse. This generation of children have had a tough ride. Cuts, covid, climate breakdown, cost of living crisis. They show us this through their behaviour. If we blame and punish them for that, we lose the opportunity to do something different and we create a generation of disaffected and angry young adults. What does make a difference? I've talked to many people trying to help young people get back on track, and they are astonishingly consistent in what they say, whether they work with young offenders or those who are too anxious to leave their bedrooms. Start where the young person is and make a connection. Show them that you value them and are interested. Help them do more of the things which have purpose to them, and show them the respect that you would like them to learn to show others. When you ask young people who struggled what made the difference to them looking back, they never say 'that hundredth detention'. They talk about the person who took an interest, whether they were a teacher, a youth worker, a climbing instructor or a skateboarder. They talk about the adult who saw them as a person, not a problem. It's not rocket science. You can't punish children into thriving. theguardian.com/education/ar…

A good teacher will educate you. A great teacher will inspire you to pursue your dreams. Wonderful teacher asked her students what they wanted to do for work as adults. She then used AI to produce images of her students doing said jobs in the future. xitter.cf/visualfeastwang/status…

This reminds me of Kant: there are 3 categories of students: 1. Autodidactic - they can learn on their own. Teaching is superfluous 2. Laggards - they cannot learn no matter the quality or amount of teaching 3. Middling - these are the ones where teaching helps

I’ve recently set up a mental health check in board similar to this one (but not quite the same) in my room. Today, a child who would never have come to me and asked to talk put his post it note on the ‘I need to talk’ section. We talked. He was so thankful for it.
